Engine Rattle

Thought i'd share this bit of info for other users.

Yesterday my 1.8 VVT-i developed a bit of a rattle.

This was from the left side as you look at the engine from the front.

It only started around 1,300 rpm. And disappeared with increase in engine revs.

No other symptoms.

However, after joing this forum and reading a few posts on problems, i discovered the topic on "oil consumption".

On checking my oil level, it was worringly low.

I generally check my oil once a month, but with changing jobs etc, sadly i missed a few checks.

Topping up with 3ltrs, yes 3ltrs !! the rattle has gone. I suspect it was a "piston slap" that was taking place.

The mileage when bought was 84k, its now on 88k, so this would give a burn rate around that which was listed as around 0.5ltr per 1,000 miles.

So i shall be checking the oil more closely in future.

I recokon that is what my rattle might be, as i get it on pull away and accelerating from low speed, but disappears once moving or accelerating at higher speeds. Mine has 100k, and do need to top up 0.5 to 1 litre every month or so, especially in the winter months. I use the thicker 10w/40 oil as i feel this may offer better prtection for the engine moving parts.

Definately keep an eye on the oil level from now on. The rattle will most prob have been from the timing chain/chain tensioner with the low oil.

There warranty for poor oil consumption has been extended to 7 yrs 112,500 miles or something like this (may have the figures wrong but its def been extended) If starets using much more maybe a trip to the dealership would be best :D

Mart.

hello

re engine rattle -- it looks strange -- please revert with more details.

i noted you've purchased your car at 88k -- i have also purchased mine at 74k as 2nd hand one. it was understood the first impressions were very good in compare with ford sierra 2.3dl. after 1,000 km milage i have disclosed the sump deepstick shown min level (!!!). ok i have located Mr T dealer in our area and got serviced my car having changes ALL liquids + brakes pads. after that is have been checking oil in the sump each day in order to catch whether engine burn too much oil or not. then i noticed it does. i was in worries what to do. Mr T told me that this problem is in fact actual for these engines. but the money have been spent and no way back for me. i have been thinking what to do then and dealer has advised me to try to use an additiove that rebuild metal parts. i was in doouts whether to use or not. my engine has been consuming 10 ltr (5W30) between each oil change. now i have passed two services (2 x 10k) and after putting an additive i have experienced that oil consumpption has dropped (!!!) and now it is 7.0 ltr/10k. it looks better than before. i am going to get serviced in the end of January and have already asked service men to book the same additive for me for second time. i never accelerate the engine more than 3,000 rpm. i expect the second treatment will reduce oil consumption up to 5.0 ltr/10k. in case your car is under no warranty than youo have not got anything to lose -- all costs are covered from your porket. but re rattle - please revert with some observations. what are rpm at cool starting???

cheers/igor

Thanks for replies guys....

Igor,

My car was bought at 84,000miles not 88k..!!

The owners handbook does say that oil burn should be a max of 1ltr per 1,000miles... quite normal..

What additive are you using...????

Please share the information on that...!!!

RPM at cold start is 1,100 .. while the auto choke is on...

Once warm the RPM drops to 750/800.........

hope this helps

You may find that the dealer was intentionally 'over filling' the engine when your car was serviced. This may explain the difference. There are several reports of this having been done by dealers for these engines on the forum.

I've found that fresh oil tends to burn slower than older oil. Ie the rate of loss is less soon after a service. The rate of loss tends to increase in the months which follow.

I wouldn't put any faith in any engine additive.

hi yes we have definitely the same red coloured manual and i also noticed the same wording as 1 ltr as max.

re additive --- it is called as "ROYAL" in our area, i will try to get its formula for you once arrived to dealer for this service.

moreover i will make digital photo and will send to your private address if you wish. i am only in doubts whether this product is famous or not.

re rpm at cool start ---- i have been facing the same but my engine's rpm were higher (1500) and the reason was confirmed as poor ignition plugs and poor petrol quality (!!!), but it is understood that the problem might be in other. check with gauges display whether your cat convertor icon is ON or not?

reverting/cheers/igor

hi they could not overfill the sump. having faced to this problem i purchased 2 x 5 ltr of 5W30 for next filling. now i have 1 x 5 ltr as full sealed as remainder in my garage. i have only used 5 ltr + 2 ltr as remainder from the last oil change. and these 2 ltr were in 5 ltr plastik can. the arythmetic is very simple.

do not give up and try to consultate with good garages. i will send all details soon + formulla in case it will be printed on the nameplate.

cheers/igor
