Snow Chains For Rav4 225/65 17

:help: Has anyone bought snow chains for a 2007 MY RAV4? The clearance under the Spring pocket on the strut looks tight so I am not certain a 16mm chain will fit. Also most suppliers don't seem to recognise 225/65 17 as a valid tyre size (is it only fitted to RAV4?).

If anyone has used chains on this vehicle please can you tell me the make, type, where from and how much.

Thanks

Alice

Welcome to the club.

I don't know about snow chains but what are you expecting???

Last year we had fairly deep snow twice and it went everywhere so I never even considered chains.

Perhaps our resident parts man can help. Try pm ing Parts-King.

Good luck

Chains!

I had a customer some time ago who specifically needed chains as they were a legal requirement where he was going in Europe, cant remember where to be honest. They can be fitted, see your handbook for details, but Toyota dont sell them. I was blasted up hill and down dale by Mr customer, he got onto Toyota who got on to me asking why I couldnt supply him. "Because you dont sell them Mr toyota, Doh!" Needless to say he wasnt impressed Unless you expect 6 foot of snow, I would save the money on buying chains and buy an extra wooley :D: Has anybody ever got a RAV stuck in snow? not round here anyway and we do get a bit in the hills

Thanks for that, I would be interested too know how other people get on in snow with road tyres.

My problem is similar to the king's customer, in most French ski resorts you are required to have chains or 4wd and M&S tyres.

I've had a little search on the internet, and it would seem that snowchains.co.uk have a good selection of snow chains.

Prices start at £139.95 and fit the Rav 4!

Hope that's some help

Hi, slightly new to this forum as I am Toyota Harrier owner, it is the Wife that has the Mark 1 Rav, we currently live in Moscow, Russia (not Scotland or Idaho), we used for a period Continental Ice Contact (studded) but at present use Yokohama all season tyres - as Continental's on my Harrier and all seson on the Rav, both are good but the Continentals do have a slightly more grip capability------although on Ice you might just as well fit Baur skates and do the "Bolero" !!!! as neither work efficiently on sheet ice----and nor do snow chains!!

Sorry just my intro.

I have had little experience with chains, but what I have had is the mess they cause to your nice shiney alloys which seem to get scratched with use. If it is possible, I might be more inclined to get M&S tyres fitted to a cheap set of steel wheels, and swop everything over when you go abroad, I do know ofpeople who have done that, although chains would be a much cheaper option, they are a pain to fit when you get there!

Have anyone tried this: http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/sncltrsy.html?

I recall that Land Rover had a similar accessory (when I had my Freelander). Probably not as robust as chains but a lot easier to fit and remove than chains (much lower profile and no reaching around behind the wheels).

Right, so clearly nobody who reads this forum has ever actually bought chains for a car like ours!

Should anyone want any in future, I have found a reasonably priced set which fit.

They are Ice-grip POL245 chains. I got them from toys4cars.co.uk (http://www.toys4cars.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1488_1490_2613&products_id=13108) priced £65.99, delivered within 48 hours.

Alan at toys4cars was very helpful and was able to confirm that they had previously tried the chains on a similar vehicle. I communicated with pretty well every purveyor of snow chains in the UK, and some beyond, and this was the only company who could express any knowledge of our vehicle fitment who could offer a product at less than £130.

I suspect that any 16mm chain whose size is specified as "245" would actually fit, but have found no references to chain size specification to confirm this.

If, like most people buying snow chains in the UK, you only need them as a safety measure for visiting a ski resort a couple of times a year, I would suggest there is no sense paying for big brand-name chains. Cheap e-bay type chains are fine for the minimal use yours are likely to get.
