Yaris T3

Hi all

I just bought a 2nd hand Yaris today and it's 2004 Yaris T3. It comes with a key (obviously ;) ), but it doesn't appear to have central locking. Just thought that if it was 2004 model, would central locking not be standard? I ask as the key I have looks like a spare, the passenger door has no key barrel but the car doesn't central lock using the key I have.

If I thought it was equipt to be central locking, I would try and purchase a key from Toyota. I'm a newbie to Toyota. Just coming over from a Renault...

Any help is appreaciated.

Thanks!

Hiya, Welcome to the club.

I used to own a 2004 T3 (it was on an 04 plate) and it came with three keys - two were black with two buttons on, one for unlocking and one for locking. There is also what I called the "spare" which was light grey in colour and didn't have any buttons - I think it's also referred to as a Valet key as it only unlocks the doors, not the boot (or something like that - I've never actually used that particular key).

Did you buy it privately out of interest? I also know that the spare keys should come with a small code which I believe is what is used to programme any spare keys that didn't come with the car originally. The passenger side doesn't have an actual slot for inserting a key it's just a plain silver disc.

I have attached a photo to the bottom of this post to hopefully give a bit more clarification as to the differences between the two keys and also show the thin silver long and thin bit which has the code on it.

Thank you for the reply. The key that I have is that top grey one and it does have a code attached, as in the photo. I did buy it privately and that was the only key that they had for the vehicle. I really want to get one of the black keys. Any idea where is best/cheapest? Cheers!

My wife has a 53 plate Yaris T3 and that has 3 sets of keys (2 black and one grey). Central locking is also on the car..

Have you tried asking at you local dealer the price of a key ?

Yeah T3`s do come with central locking. There is no code written on the grey key that you already have but it does have a transponder in it. Whatever you do, dont lose it. This is because you need at least 1 key that already works, to be able to program the imobiliser on your car, to accept any further new keys. If you do loose the 1 key that you have, then it`l cost you a full lock set AND an imobiliser ECU before you can use your car again. Yes, replacement keys are VERY expencive to buy from Mr T, but are availible seperatly. Dealers can supply a key(using your chassis number), with buttons, that will phisicaly match your grey key. Then the new key will have to be progammed to your car as below.

The black keys that you need also contain a transponder that the imobiliser reads to start your car much like your grey key. But the black keys also have a remote locking transmitter in them(the buttons). This is completly seperate to the transponder even though it is housed in the same key. So any new key you buy, firstly must phisically match or be cut to match your grey key, so you can turn the locks. Then the transponder in your new black key will have to be programmed to your cars immobiliser ECU. Then finally, your central locking transmitter will have to be programmed to your cars system. Good luck

Is all this possible or will it cost an arm and a leg? I was thinking about getting a remote central locking kit from the net and see if this will work as the central locking key? Anyone any experience installing these devices?

Buying a "remote central locking kit" is fine, but you have to install all the motor in the door, and wire the reciever up. Nothing i`ve ever seen will work your existing Toyota central locking directly, apart from a properly programmed Toyota transmitter key.

You could get an old Toyota key, cut the steel blade off, and see if someone could program it to operate your origanal system...i.e. just use it like a door locking fob.

anyone know if it is possible to use an old toyota key and reprogram it to just open my yaris??

Sometimes you see transponder keys for sale on eBay but I wouldn't risk it. I would swallow, pay the price and go to Toyota to get one done properly. As said previousely, you will have to change the ecu aswell as your looks/ignition switch, if you lose the grey key! This will cost in excess of a thousand quid! Much better to spend £140 on a new key, which will then open the doors too.

BTW, next time you are in the car, test the small switch next to the drivers arm rest. You (may) have the electric window switches, then a very small switch that stops the passenger from using their electric window. Then there is one more switch. This will look/ unlock (all) the doors if you operate it. If this is working, you will know for sure, you have central locking! B)
