Right bought a double DIN unit JVC AVX800

after taking it out the box I thought, hmm that looks bigger than the hole in the dash.

So I've just been out and traced on a bit of paper the outline of the supposedly double DIN radio in the Celica I have, and its smaller than the JVC!

So what the heck is going on!?! anyone know?

My car is a Celica GT Gen 7 post face lift.

Am I going to have to return the !Removed! unit... anyone help please! :(

(Or does the whole of the front of the unit have to sit proud, including the plastic surround by ~2cm? if so that looks a bit crap! :'()

Maybe it is meant to stick out so the screen can rotate freely.

The celica is a double din hole.. with a little extra width to it!

For once Toyota are not at fault.. must be a first!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah the Celica is a double DIN as in its 10cm high and wider than 18cm, I guess just imagined the unit to fit flush like this and not poke out.

here is an image of the unit "bare". As you can see the metal chassis is double DIN, however the black trim is a lot bigger (the wider trim behind the screen trim).

I guess its supposed to go in like this and stick proud like this, although Im not sure how the filler bits for the sides are going to fit... hmmm sounds like I'm going to get tourettes at the weekend!

(I'm also grumpy because of manflu! :( )

Ta.

I remember when I had a double din screen fitted in my MR2, I thought it didn't look right at first because there was an ugly gap around the unit and the surround that came with the unit didn't help. I eventually sussed out how to fit the original surround back on and it ended up looking stock.

The picture here looks fine, but in this picture it looks like it could do with a slightly different surround over the unit to fill in the slight gap to make it look more like a stock unit.

Looking at the picture of the bare unit, it is similar to how my MR2 unit looked... in that when it was fitted without the surround the screen seemed to stick out from the rest of the unit, but when I figured out how to get the factory surround back over the new unit it looked stock again and everything fitted perfectly.

Maybe there is a surround you haven't tried (my unit came with 2.. neither of which fitted for me) which would make your unit look better or perhaps there is another aftermarket surround you need to buy?.. I'm sure those with similar screens will be able to tell you if there is.

EDIT:

Just remembered... When I removed my old surround it wouldn't fit the new unit untill I removed the surround that came with it, even at that it didn't stay on. It was only after I put the new unit in position that the factory surround would clip into place. If there is a surround on the factory unit try and see if it can come off and fit onto your new unit... remembering to remove any surround that is allready on the new unit.

Thanks,

When I give it a go, I'll take some pics and post them on here.

If it goes well perhaps a "How to" guide?, (if it goes badly, a how "not to" guide ;))

Edit: Yup exactly right, the surround on the JVC needed removing! Brill.

You could try drilling some new holes in your stereo mounts to move the screen back towards on the console a bit...?

Btw, looking at your Pic, and the surrounding housing, I think you live about 2 mins from me! :) Have seen a Silver GT, maybe at its home near the shopping area in one of Derby's outlying estates. Always wondered who's it may have been...!

Hey,

Well it all fits well, only took @2 hrs to do!

I have made a "how to guide" with pics, but can't upload it here as its 9MB :(.

(any ideas? I don't have any personal hosting space, its html file with images/videos)

As for where I live, its in the oakwood area of Derby. I think there is one other GT like mine driving around Derby recently as friends have seen it but I haven't. I reckon the garage has sold the twin of mine, since when I went looking they had only 2 of them in!

Cheers.

Host the photos somewhere like http://photobucket.com/ (its free) then just post the URL of the picture, useing the IMG tags in your "how to" guide and the picture will appear.

example..

Then fit the unit like this

[img=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/cfc/DSCF0032.jpg]

...then you connect...... etc etc

Thanks, I'll do that, although I was hoping to avoid creating an account/password for yet another site! :D

One slight issue I've noticed with the unit is a slight high pitched whistling sound through the Speakers. Even with volume set to zero or amplifier gain set to off (turning off the internal amplifier.)

Anyone ideas what this might be?

cheers.

Attached is the article I wrote on my installation exploits :)

The index.html file is the one you want, the stereofitting.html file is the original that assumes the pictures/videos are in the same local folder as it. (incase you downloaded the pics).

Cheers.

High whistling sound, eh? Don't know if you've noticed, but does it change with engine accelleration? I'm just wondering if its not a brilliant earth connection you've got there...

And yeah, you're litterally 4 corners from me! :)

Hi, the whistling I think is a dirty earth, with the engine off and the volume set to zero you can just hear it. I think perhaps a suppressor is required (like this) on one or more of the cables.

Hey I wonder if its something to do with the fact that:

a) I left the park cable bare and on earth

B) I didn't bother connecting the other AV cables on the back thus there are prongs that are naked and may pic up something

*shrug*

Do you need to have your park cable connected in order for the unit to function? If not, I'd get rid of it if I were you!

If you've got bare cables showing - tape them up - Ductape, LX Tape, what ever. If you've got plugs showing, don't worry. They'll need +ve and -ve connecting (ie somethings got to touch both the inside, and the outside of the plug) in order for them to start making odd noises. And you've got to have that imput selected as well, so chances of it being plugs is slim.

I'll bet its that you've got your park cable on earth...

Well just had the unit out again, disconnected the Speakers and its still there.... lo and behold its the buzzing noise you get from backlights on LCD displays! *Doh*. I must have sensitive hearing since a Toyota mechanic on Monday couldn't hear it. (car was in for service).

Now have got a 4GB sd card with reader connected to the unit. *Yay* (everything at 320kbps!)

So has anyone experienced a high pitched faint humming/buzzing sound from units with LCD/TFT screens?

I know pretty much all mobile phones do it if you hold them to your ear and make the backlight come on, what I'm wondering is how common it is for AV head units and how loud too.

I really don't want to have to send it back if they are all the same!

Thanks.

No idea mate, never come up close and personal with one. If you're disappointed with it, you can always donate it to me! :D

Ah well I'm going to get a second opinion first to see if my hearing is just over sensitive!

It's definitely the screen though, if I put a folded up cloth over it the sound is deadened almost completely, but not exactly a practical solution!

One other thing that I noticed on fitting the unit, there are 2 "spare" connectors that where not connected to anything. Anyone any ideas what these are used for?

(See attached picture)

Thanks.

My Controls (Top right of each screen when you log in, just below the main TOC links - Gallery, Register, etc), then Change Avatar Settings (or similar). Upload a file there, and it'll show on every post you make.

There's size limits on it (the details of which escape me), but it'll tell you when you've got it wrong!

So, 3 Oakwood lads all driving round unaware of each other!! Have a look for a Black G7 with Oz SuperT's, and when you see one, gimme a wave! :)

Hmm the wonders of technology....... couldn't paste a valid linky-link on the avatar editor.......

As it turns out, when viewing the photo's in my gallery there's an option to 'set picture as avatar' so simple it's brilliant.

just like me :P

I shall keep me beady peepers peeled for yon motor chap, although i have got a nasty case of tunnel vision (i prefer to call it 'focus'), so don't be offended if i tootle on by without so much as a nod.

Cheers,

Rich
