Exhaust Manifold/turbo Problem

A few weeks ago i noticed on the manifold heatshield cover fins, some carbon deposit on them. Then on initial startup and until the car warmed up it sounded like the exhaust is blowing at the manifold. i can see its from there from opening the bonnet.

Then it went away for a few weeks, until yesterday. So now i went to the local garage who said it could be two things, Turbo to Manifold Gasket, or a crack in the manifold. And it was too big a job for them.

Any ideas on what it could be, and how big a job really is it guys?

Thanks in advance

if it's just a blown gasket it's a cheap fix and i'd try and do it yourself, if it's a cracked manifold then it could cost you a bit more unless you got a replacement from a breakers.

take the heatsheild off and when the engines cool start it up and have a look to see if the gases are escaping from the gaskets, either mani to turbo or head to mani, or if it's actually coming from the manifold it's self. best to have a look for yourself as it's an easy part of the engine to get to

Undo the 3 cc mount bolts then loosen the turbo to cc pipe clamps and slide the pipe up onto the cc.

Raise the front edge of the cc until you can get a spanner/socket etc over the 2 bolts onto of the manifold and remove these.

Then remove the single bolt from the front of the Heatshield down infront of the radiator and remove the shield.

The manifold and turbo will not be seen in all it's glory, lower the cc again and reconnect intake pipe then start the engine.

Get a small peice of tissue paper and pass it over and around the manifold and gaskets to detect the leak.

One warning use lots of wd40 on the heatshield bolts they then to be quite rusty and are easy to snap off.

what kind of a sdound is it could you be more specific? is it like a rattling rather than a blowing sound? and have you noticed a dip in power or anything? if it is a crack in manifold i would imagine top end power you will be loosing a lot of boost

the manifold went on the works van once, and it sounds exactly the same, i.e like a tank. totally blowing and sounding rough. only thing is though, when the engine warms up the noise goes away, It must be the metal expanding and closing the gap somewhere.

P.S what is the cc? The coolant black box on top of engine?

Its an st205 btw

only problem with welding a manifold is that it can become very weak. make sure the place is good and evidence of previous work! if it was me i would buy a new manifold. invest in a better one for the win!

New manifolds surprisingly cheap from Fensport; I bought one a while back because mine had cracked and I couldn't find a 9 stud one anywhere. And if you get a second hand one you really need to skim it before you fit it, unless it's perfect.
