Just bought a 1986 4WD hilux, and the handbrake doesn't work. Looked underneath and it appears the reason it doesn't work is because the lever coming out of the back of the drum (which the handbrake lever pulls on) actually hits the leaf spring, stopping it moving enough to apply the handbrake.

Does anybody know why this is?

My only idea is that at some stage in the past a previous owner may have fitted levers from a 2WD hilux, which would sit lower and hence the leaf spring would be in the way. But this implies that the levers for the 4WD are longer than the 2WD ones?

Clutching at straws really, any help greatly appreciated!

I assume you will have fixed this by now, but if you haven't you should replace the rear brake shoes and adjust them properly using the star wheel within the rear hubs.

You will probably need to re adjust the handbrake cable too.
