New To Gt4's

i have just bought a celica gt4 st205 its compltly standard apart from a sard dump valve kakmoto exhaust and a hks filter in the standard airbox.

i havnt had the car long but i feel that the car does not like to go over 6.2rpm. im going to change the spark plugs i have changed the distributer and i will see if this makes a powerr difference but peak power seams very much before the limiter. i am sure this is not normal. i am also going to gap the plugs to 0.7 i no the recommended is 0.8 but i feel 0.7 may perform better?

i would like some advice guys but it doesnt not feel that fast in high rev's the previus owners did mention it may need new spark plugs and i will change oil which i understand is 5w40 fully synthetic. correct me if im wrong still leanring about these cars its my first toyota

Should rev a bit higher than that, get service items done first to get it in the best of health to start with. Maybe getting starved of fuel higher up the rev range? Check the fuel filter.

I'm sure someone else will give a better diagnosis

The limiter is there for a reason, why the hell would you want to go over it??

I just sold my GT4, it peaked at 6,500, and started to redline at about 6,700 i think... anything more than that is putting your car at risk anyway...

My car felt that after 6,000 it was getting gutless, but my dyno results actually showed that its peak was 6500

If your going to change parts, do so but there shouldnt be any need for changing the gaps or anything...

Give it some new oil, 5w40 silkolene pro s is great for the gt4.

Change the fuel filter, a pain in the *****, but worth it.

Get a new filter in it, i had a foam HKS and worked brilliantly

and get some grade 7 NGK plugs, they will already come gapped to the right amount.

Try it then, the only way to test power is getting it on a dyno.

You could always test the ecu for errors, but im sure its fine...

The gt4's have a smoother power delivery than other cars, and makes the driving experience a much nice involvement.

sorry i think i confused you i dont want to take it over the limiter that would make no sence. thats the feeling i have with the gt4 its gutless after 6kish but if peak power is at 6500 then sounds identical to mine i have checked piping and manifold and no leaks and turbo is very smooth and delivers full boost. i have checked ecu for errors when i first got it. it was flashing a 54. whcih i understand it was showing low coolant which i topped up after a few blips of throttle was full again. which solved that.

i have booked it in for oil and filter and fuel filter changes on monday it needs it the oil looks manky and old i always change the essentials when getting any car. i would also like some advice on what to do with the cat as i have heard they are very restrictive. would a 3inch replacement pipe benifit with the gt4? i like my cars being in good condition so general up keep such as this i am very keen on!

yep 3 inch down pipe is good and livens it up a bit. xs power ones are good value for money, they don't fit quite as well as the Aussie but then they are not as expensive either.

if you want it checked over to see if there are any problems hiding take it to Ian at TR&D in Nottingham (0115 9680666). ian is the countries leading specialist in GT4's and will give your car a check over for a mere £35 and let you know of any thing that is or maybe a problem.

the power issue does sound about right for a fairly std car so i doubt its a problem

CAT's are a pain in the ***** tho. Ive had a de-cat pipe for months now but still not got it on my car, I give up when I try and get the heat shield off the cat and my hands are cut to bits and im just too cold to even function! Surely there must be an easy way lol

cheers for advice guys!

i have changed oil and stuff and performance seams to have picked up a bit.

i had an idea i thought instead of getting a dc just knocking the internal from the cat because its going to be basicaly the same with pretty much the same gas flow i dont plan on taking it over 350 for a while yet. going to buy all my mods at once. i want to get the cat off or followed out and turn boost upto 1.1bar then i shall be happy for a while. does anyone know of any group buys for an electronic boost guage or again any good websites to buy from?

The only thing with gutting the cat is it will fail it's MOT if you don't have a spare to stick on. Also I would try eBay for the boost gauge, unless you wanted to spend a bit more on a decent one.

not to worry about the mot i have a guy who lives near me who owns a garage that would not mind the emissions he has done all my previous cars with no cats on but is a honest mechanic other wise.

i will have a look on eBay but i would like a decent one. if i am going to be playing about with boost i want it to be accurate. i dont plan on taking it over 1.1bar anyway untill i have a few more mods to put on and i have heard 1.1bar is safe on these

a good gauge is the SPA dual digital ones, they are about £150 but will measure boost and temp (temp can be any temp. water, oil etc)

yep 1.1 bar is as far as i would go on a stock motor. piston ringlands have a short life above that
