D4d Fuel Starvation

Hi All,

New to the forum as wife has defected from the German side to a Rav4 D4D 2002 and I am very impressed with it however my problem is that engine runs fine untill 4th and 5th gear when acceleration is required above 3000Rpm and engine seems to be starved of fuel and it wont climb above 75-80mph and any incline is even worse. I have swopped the MAF filter with a known good one, changed the fuel filter and checked the tank filter but still no better. The timing belt has just been changed and the water pump as it was leaking although problem was apparent before that. I have been informed that the timimg belt may have slipped a tooth before being changed and new belt may be fitted in same "incorrect position". Is this possible?

Has anyone had a similar problem as I want to eliminate as much as possible before handing over to Mr T?

Hi Barbarian and welcome to the club.

This is not an unknown problem and is caused by the pumping elements in the high pressure fuel pump. If you have a reasonable mechanical aptitude you can change them yourself and Parts-King will ship them to you at a discounted rate. Read this link;

Hi Guys

Just an update on my situation. I have just finished replacing the SCV solenoids (Part No04221-27011) on the fuel pump and taken a spin up Motorway, unfortunatelty nothing has changed and I still have a regular coming and going of power above 3000rpm in top two gears especially. The cycle is like 1 second of fuel and 1 second of no fuel and you can pretty much know the rhythm.

Any more suggestions

Hi Barbarian

The manual says that if the fuel pressure sensor is faulty the engine will revert to fail safe mode to limit the engine power. This is done in 1 second cycles. It should have stored DTC fault code P0087. Can you read the codes or can somebody do it for you?

If you can determin this is the case I will send you some pdf files but you'll have to send me your email address.

Can you say more about the SCV valves? Do you mind saying how much they were and what it was like to fit them? Do you mean the main pumping elements as I understand there is a single SCV?

Hi Anchorman

I was informed by my local Mr T that no codes would be stored if Engine managemant light was not lit, so I did not have diagnostic done. If this is not the case I can have a guy check for codes and I shall post results.

The "Suction Control Valve" kit comprises of two solenoid valves Red & Green, and, as your link had said, are quite simple to replace after moving the coolant botte and removing intercooler hose. I also removed wiring harness bracket as I found it easier to access solenoids. The complete operation takes about 45mins. The kit costs £176+ vat if you have to pay full price.

OK Barbarian - thanks.

I absolutely assure you that codes can be stored without the light being on so it would be a good idea to have it done. I can't guarantee that something is stored but by the sounds of things there is a strong possibility. The codes are stored when the light has been on in 3 levels of priority.

Light comes on and goes off - less important fault that needs rectifying when convenient.

Light comes on and stays on - more important fault that needs urgent attention.

Light flashes - critical fault, do not drive.

Some of these faults in any category will cause the vehicle to default to limp home in order to prevent serious damage.

Don't forget you can buy a code reader for less than £30 delivered if somebody wants to charge you a lot for doing it;

http://www.talktomycar.co.uk/Shop/Code_Readers/mj004.htm

Just going back to these SCV's. Were they described as SCV's on the invoice? The reason I ask is that all the info I have shows 1 SCV and 2 main pumping elements and I want to understand exactly what you fitted.

Because the RAV in question is a 2002 D4D he will not be able to read the OBD11

even tho it has an OBD11 type socket. Petrol yeah, diesel nope

Just be aware of this.

Part number 04221-27011 is a PAIR of SCV valves, they were not on the original parts catalogue because they were not available as a part (you had to buy the pump!) but as they were going faulty, they made a matched pair available under part number, they are modified to cure the original fault

Kingo :thumbsup:

EDIT

Price from me £185.30 including carriage and VAT

I think Mr T can do it.

Hi guys

Only getting back to this issue now as have been v busy.

I have plugged into OBD 2 but no codes were stored. I have checked turbo diaphram and operated it manually whilst driving. Engine is boosting more but then fuel once again is being shut off and I can bring up Code P0234. I can hear a air valve opening/closing which I assume to be the solenoid that I am replacing with vacuum pump to Turbo temporaily and fuel is closed down as regular as always albeit more severely this time and at higher revs

Any clues?
