2.0d4d Dead Spot At 2000rpm

Has anyone noticed their Avensis D4D having a dead/flat-spot in the rev range at about 2k?

Mine really stutters at 2k particularly in 4th, which is really annoying as it is the comfort point in the range when I'm at 50.

Aside from a full remap/chip at about £400, is there anything I can get done about it? It's driving me mad as I'm constantly changing gear because of it.

It's been recently serviced, but has done it since I've had the car. I've lived with it so far, but really would like it sorted. No holes as far as I know.

It happens at half gas. If I put my foot down it powers through it.

Seems to be every gear, and no - I've not checked the fuel filter. Where is it?

Thanks for the help, by the way

Its in the engine bay

I am not actually sure if the new D4D has two,

Ie one at the pump level the other nearer to the engine

i will try to describe it,

Location wise, where you fill the clutch and brake fluid in, look to the right, you will see the chasis number of the car,

On that Firewall pannel their will need another container, it will will be made from grey/whitish plastic with a black top on,

will have a little rubber push button ontop, should read some thing like "press untill hard"

THe common problems with the D4D loosing power, or alot of the flat spots are generally Fuel pressure related.. / AFR.

Have you cleaned out the mass air flow sensor?

how old is the air filter in the car?

Now you laugh as if it should be obvious! The last thread I read concening fuel filters was for the previous model, where it was under the rear seats!!!

The air filter was replaced less than 5000 miles ago. I've not cleaned the MAF sensor, and wouldn't know how to. I hate not being able to get a Haynes for this car...

MAF sensor could be a possibility here, as to get the car going when it was having the starter motor problem, damp start was squirted into the hose bypassing the air filter. I believe this would go stright to the MAF sensor? If so, the first can of damp start was actually more like WD40 (it was dark and I didn't notice...) so maybe it gummed up the MAF.

What is the best thing to clean it with? (normally for these things I'd guess WD40 ironically!)

I will check the fuel filter anyway, as I'd guess it would be the simplest one to look at. What is the process for cleaning it? Does the filter hold pressure? If so, how do I do this safely?

Cheers

Ah now you mention the damp start!

booo!

Check the MAF sensor first.

Cleaning it.. you need some of that IPA, or EPA.

avalible from most good shops -

as for fuel filter, system is pressurised.

filter would need to be replaced.

Do you know where the maf sensor sits

Thanks, I've just come back from cleaning it and saw your reply!

I found a thread on another site about cleaning a MAF on a different engine, but it was enough to show me what I was after.

I've cleaned it, and although it wasn't black, he cotton buds I used were afterwards...

I'll see tomorrow if that's helped.

No chance, I've since been drinking, so not tonight!

Is there a fuse that can be removed to reset the ECU, or is it a case of disconnecting the Battery for 10 minutes? If it's the latter, then I'll leave it as I can't face the nightmare of reprogramming the satnav again...! It should self adjust given time, if of course there is any difference at all.

Well that was a success. I drove to work today and there was none of the hesitation I've become used to over the last few months, and it was a pleasure to drive again.

Thanks for the advice cmia, it was invaluble :)
