Carina E, Strange Sound At 2500 Rpm's

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently noticed that the engine sound (or at least I perceive the sound as coming from the engine) becomes very high pitch just when I enter 2500 RPM's. Immediately when I pass 2500 RPM's, the engine sound returns to normal. This change in sound can be heard on any gear, always at 2500 RPM's, but it is more apparent on the lower gears.

Its a -97 Carina E Touring (7AFE). Anyone know what might be the cause of this?

If it is engine speed related it could be:

(i) Alternator: worn bearings. Consider running the car without the drive belt to see if the noise stops. BUT only do this for a few seconds. The belt itself may be worn and need replacing

(ii) resonance: the metal shield over the exhaust manifold may be loose.

(iii) possibly the power steering pump bearing but unlikely. The pitch would be mutch lower as it spins slower.

Hi,

My Carina do the same (4A-FE engine), exactly. It's seems to be a resonance with the exhaust. I notice it between 2600 & 2700RPM's. It's not speed relative, because this resonance append at every speed but always at the same RPM's.

My car do this for 100.000km and nothing bad. So it's not a bug, it's a feature :D

A friend of mine on a french board has the same sound :)
