Screeching Noise When Braking

I currently purchased Avensis 1.8 GS VVTI Y-Reg (2001) model, around 77k in mileage. It was perfectly smooth when I purchased a month ago, just recently I noticed a screeching noise when I am braking at high speed. The noise is only heard when I keep the windows open ( so it could be that the noise was there from beginning, just that I did not notice it !! )

I checked that all the indicators in the instrument panel look alright.

Is it something to worry of ? the car was last serviced a year ago at 70K, and all services were from toyota. Could it be a brake wear ?

any light in this is very welcome !

thanks,

If your vehicle is still under warranty I'd go back to your car dealer.

It could be a number of reasons why your hearing this noise. I'd start off with checking the front brakes then the rear. Check for brake pad wear and make sure there is nothing lodged in between the pad and the disc eg, stones, dirt etc.

Good luck

Can the brake pad wear be visible without removing the wheel ? or can I see any stone etc just looking down the wheel ?

You would have to remove the tire to check pad wear.

The Avensis has a "Wear indicator" attached to the pad. This is a metal clip attached to the pad, when the pad wears down, the clip then touches the disc and produces a squealing noise. There is usually a bit left on the pads, but best to whip the wheel off and check it out, just to make sure. We can supply you pads if required. Discounts to TOC members

Hi Kingo

I sent you a PM but it is Saturday so I understand :) .

Do I get a discount at Lindop Toyota at Queensferry for replacement of rear disc brakes and pads?

I am also after two fron tyres. How much would cost me if I use the Bridgestone Turanza supplied/fitted by Mr. T?

Thanks in advance!

John

PS Can you PM me with the figures?

hi

yes it is definitely pads. they are easy to check once the wheel is removed. i disagree that something is between disc and pad. brake with engine using and yr new pads will serve you long time.

cheers/igor
