One question you haven't answered was whether any warning lights were displayed.

Yes engine management lights came on and stayed on even when the keys were out of the ignition

That's not right, with the ignition off the engine management light should go out - suggests an intermittent temperature related electrical problem to me? Maybe a sticking relay???

Certainly sounds like over heating.  Go back to the basic:

1. Check Coolant level - Open the Bonnet, look at the coolant reservoir tank near the radiator to the passenger side.  You can also open up the radiator cap and look, but only when the engine is cold.  If they were out of juice, you know the problem.

2. Check Engine oil level - Engine oil as well as lubricate the internals of the engine, it also acts as coolant.  I've seen several instances where adding oil solves the overheating issue.

3. Inspect the radiator - Over time, debris will build up on the radiator fins reduce the cooling effectiveness.

4. Check the radiator fan is working - if the engine shuts off without the fan spinning, then chances are either the Fan is dead or the fan's relay is bad.

If you have an Infrared Thermometer, you can check the temperature on various hoses.  The reason why you want to do so is to make sure the "Thermostat" is functioning properly.

Or you may take it to garages, pay them a small fee to diagnose the problem.

OVER HEATING is a BIG issue.  So whatever you do, you want to make sure IT IS NOT relating to overheating.
