Towing

Can a 4.1 realistic tow anything? e.g. small horse box?

I'm guessing later models being bigger would be ok but wondering if Snowy would cope?

Thank you :)

Maybe a small horse box but minus the horse !! The owners manual should show you the towing limits etc., for your particular model. It is also a recommendation (not law) that unless your an experienced tower the maximum fully laden weight of the trailer should'nt exceed 85% of the cars kerbweight.

Regards.

I've towed an alloy car transporter trailer with a Jaguar XJS on the back....it was really too much for the RAV, but then again, a XJS weighs almost 2 tons.....

If the trailer is in good condition, and the trailer has brakes that work efficiently, then I see no reason why you couldn't pull a horsen carriage. Just watch your speed - max of 50mph I'd say. Anticipate braking a bit sooner. If you will be towing a horse box often, try to get a towbar stabiliser fitted (as they have on caravans....it helps to keep the trailer from snaking (as it will do with the short wheel base RAV).

The RAV clutch is reasonable - to cope with possible off road use - and the gearing is good for starting off.

Any other questions, let me know.

And................

if you have a removeable floor in the trailer and back the horse in you can use it to recover your RAV in the unlikely event that it breaks down!!!

Uhhhhh

Well the first 30 miles from cardiff north wis good.....not. Noisy beyond belief and the smoke wis awfull...inside the cab. having pulled into a laybe jist aff the Mwhatever onto the A44?, I received a call to say the engines radiator fan wis electric(ah'd spotted that wan) but that it wis switched on by a red switch oan the home-made dasboard. There's 3 red switches, but by that time I fear it wis too late... the mechanic frae AXA Breakdown Cover dully arrived after a row wi the call centre person. Ascertaining that the coolant was sludgy took 10 minutes, but we found a large lever below the dashboard which seems to be a kind of choke cos when I moved it the clouds of blue smoke dwindled. The diesel pouring out the middle of the car was, we reckon from the tank breather pipe - my fault of course for filling the tank to the brim wi bldg diesel. )I knew by this time I should stick to petrols)

So we get started again up the Mwhatever and onto the M5 and up to the M6 wi the heater working fine and the heater fan blowing the fumes back out of the cab.

Time was rolling on, and we decided to head for around Preston for an overnight, but as one of the nephews stays near Accrington, headed there....after 4 litres of oil. Must say all the lights work...when we discovered that the red switch for the Kenlowe fan was in fact the rear floodlights (F = Fan or Floodlights!) With that switched off and the other red switch on, the fan burst into life which was more than could be said for the LR.

Despite having a fresh MOT the day before, the speedo cable was broke so I guessed we were averaging 45mph in 4th (well it may have been 4th cos I never found 1st).

On Sunday morning we awoke and looked out the window to see a flat tyre...a very large tyre and very flat. Added to the unusual noises from the engine on occasion I decided that a small end may have gone and best to phone the helpful breakdown centre again. After my agreement to pay the charge to transport the LR 200 miles to Glasgow, as the glorious Footman James breakdown centre could not find my November 2007 policy renewal....despite the fact I had all the documents with me - guess who's calling Footman James first thing in the morning!!

So we then had a pleasant relaxing drive up to Glasgow for the final 200 miles letting the driver take the strain.

The LR is now sitting outside The Garage awaiting their opening at 8.30am where hopefully once they've stopped laughing, they will give me a list of what needs done. Rear diff and the engine looked at are the first 2. Oh, and the flat tyre changed. Then the diesel leak...and maybe look to purchase some cushions to act as door seals. Thank goodness the thing has only 3 doors - couldnae handle 5!! It has quite a new rollover cage fitted so thats a plus.

What on earth is Fairey overdrive on these things and where dya find it??? Ooooops - gonna have tae find a forum fur it. Tried wan forum but after a mentioned "RAV" they scrubbed my posts!! And dya have tae pump the brakes afore they work, despite the ink-still-wet MOT? Emission test? Cannae exist pre 1970 cars.

The 2nd RAV '94 3 door came up from London without mishap so that was good news. Once I get the regy documents, it'll change registration to almost that of the other RAV.

Now off fur a sleep - ramoro's going tae be busy....

What have you done Bothy.

It sounds like work and expense to me. The fairy overdrive is a bolt on goody for the back of the gearbox. There should be a switch on the dash or column and it can be operated under power as all that happens is a cone clutch engages an epicyclic overdrive gear. They were popular on thirsty petrols at one time but somebody has fitted it to get a bit of speed by the sound of things.

What a headache and a nightmare run by the sounds of things. I think I might have turned back and demanded a refund.

Good luck mate - I hope it doesn't cause you too much stress.

Its things like this that make you appreciate Toyota! Maybe I should have gone for a Hi-lux or whatever it is that went to the artic but the limited budget wouldn't allow!

The Garage has changed the flat tyre and started the LR engine up and no sound of a big end or small end knock so must've been something else.

For those in the Classic Cars insurance bracket, and have breakdown thru AXA, I'd beware cos thats become a nightmare - i need to write everything down and make a claim to AXA via Footman James....Knew I should have taken my camera!! I'll ask the mechanics if they can find the activator for the overdrive as well.....there's 3 levers sticking out of the floor - 1 is the pudding stirrer gearstick; 1 is the low/high ratio gear selector and the 3rd is goodness knows what.. maybe a learning opportunity. Anyway, in the hope of getting it going reasonably well, will start up a wee group in the charity for kids to try off road mud wallowing wi the LR so the RAV doesn't suffer!! The young mechanics said the LR looked cool!!! Its got a Ripspeed exhaust so I suppose that makes it cool?

Onybody wana buy a LR - pristine condition almost???? 1968 model as new (well maybe not).

Typical!

It seems the LR overdrive doesn't have a switch it has a great big bgr off lever. Here is the manual for it (numbered accross the bottom);

Well perhaps it'll be OK but I just don't like the things. I think I would have bought a big old Jap something - Land Cruiser or Patrol or similar. Never mind, you can chronicle the restoration process for us.

I never fancied the Patrol, but the Landcruiser might have been a wiser choice. Then again, I wanted something tax free and to fit within my classic car insurance.

The info on the overdrive is brilliant - thanks very much...now....where or how can I shovel in a Jaguar V12 5.3 engine into it??

I think the main things we will look at is the rear axle and the diesel engine. The former is I fear knackered, but the engine might be salvageable. But it'll be the last - only annoying thing for you guys is not only has it got 3 doors but also 3 gear levers!!! And I never knew dieselly oil burners could be as smelly and dirty!! Surely not in the Toyotas!

Once we have a run-down of LR needs, I'll take pictures and stick them on my website whenever I get time to do it.

Bit of a nuisance as its taken priority over the 2nd RAV4 turbo project just now...but I need something to shift the caravan - which now sports brand new wheels and reinforced 8 ply tyres! No, its not turbocharged yet but give me time...
