Toyota Warranty

2 weeks after buying my RAV from a dealer (with 12 months warranty) Mr. T has written offering a further 12 month extension for £475 (£445 under 10k miles p.a)

In return for a £20 voucher he wants me to start paying now - good business for him.

Are these warranties worth the money?

Would you advise me to take one out in 12 months time?

Toyotas never break down do they?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

When I bought my 2yr old RAV I paid £525 to cover me for a further 2 years after the manufacturers warranty runs out.

I personally never take extended warranties on anything - tellies, fridges or cars. These companies make huge amounts of money because they use statistics to calculate the risk and the chances predict that you either won't make a claim or the cost of the claim will be lower than you paid. So! I use that information to conclude that I would be better off with my money in my pocket. Now I have to also admit that I have something of an advantage because I am a mechanic with most tools. However, don't forget that if for instance your alternator throws its hand in, you can go to a local garage who will only charge you half the hourly rate that the main dealer will.

For anybody considering GAP insurance (to cover against your car being written off) it is an absolute racket. They will show you charts explaining that 5% of cars get damaged in some way but the numbers that get written off when they are less than 3 years old and their value is high is tiny. And if a truck hits your car and you want it written off rather than repaired - you have more or less sealed your own fate because they now add the cost of fully reimbursing you to the cost of the repair.

If you like the comfort of insurance (extended warranty) then fair enough but be sure to understand what isn't covered and remember it is a hugely profitable business for them.

Good luck.

Dealer tried it on with GAP insurance for both the RAV and the Yaris at vehicle collection time. We happily declined both times.

Bit much IMHO. You are handing over a large sum of money at the time and not satisfied with that, they want more! :nono:

I also refuse all extended warranties with exception of central heating boiler no other item is covered. In last 6-7 years i have had to replace a ceramic hob at just over 2 years old. Original dealer gave me a discount and it cost me £240 for the newer model. Add all these warranties together and they would cost that every year.

Our 2 main cars are usually changed within 3 years. Toyota 2 year extended warranty does include 2 years full breakdown cover. They only give 1 year with new car but it you buy an approved Toyota used car you get 2 years.

As an ex-mechanic i can see the pros and cons of taking out a warranty, now an aftermarket warranty is not worth a wa*k, they are truly not worth the paper they are printed on, the reason being they only replace a part once its failed, so you may hear a noisy wheel bearing but they will only replace it once its broken

Now a Toyota warranty will replace a part before It fails and cover 75% of items that were covered when the vehicle was new ,clearly it would be unreasonable to expect disc, pads ,tyres, wipers, clutches to be include as they are all wear and tear items but a used car Toyota warranty will pay for itself if you get a oxygen sensor problem, the petrol RAV4 has 4 oxygen sensors fitted around the catalytic converter ,as the cars get older the sensors corrode into the converter and if the mechanic can't get them out thats 4 new sensors and a catalytic converter £1200 than you very much !

So if you can afford a Toyota warranty i would suggest its good value for money, bearing in mind the price of items like engines, gearboxes ,diff etc....the choice is yours.

I did just that and have already had a starter motor and new Battery c/o the Toyota warranty, am sure the pair of those would have taken a sizable chunk of the £525 I paid.

Thanks to all who replied to this post. I am useless with spanners and agree that if the catalytic converters fail (I have seen reports of this also in the "Honest John" website) it will be worth the money. A few years ago I turned down an Audi warranty on my A6 and a couple of months later the suto box failed, so once bitten ....

The money has to be paid to The Warranty Group UK Ltd. who say they "administer the warranty on behalf of Toyota".

So, is it a Toyota warranty? Assume it is as it is on Toyota letterhead.

Thanks

Peter

It sounds like an insurance policy on behalf of Toyota.

Like everything in life, there are people who benefit from buying a warranty and those that don't, if your car never breaks down, you will feel cheated at paying £475 for something that was never used, however, if you have mechanical knowledge and the tools to do the job, you may well save yourself a chunk of money. Most customers either dont have the knowledge or the time to repair cars and these warranties are invaluble to them, sure there is profit in selling them, but there is profit in everything you buy. I never buy them myself because I am capable of carrying out my own repairs, but I had one exception where I bought an Olympus digital camera, at the end of 12 months the Dixons group offered me an extended warranty for another two years for £35 (about 10% of the price paid for the camera) It was the best decision I ever made, after about 18 months the camera went faulty so many times I was embarressed sending it back. When the warranty exprired the camera failed again, so I binned it and bought my new Canon

They are not for everyone, but invaluble to many

Thanks Kingo. I agree.

Can you tell me if it really is a Toyota warranty?

Thanks

Peter

Toyota genuine warranties are underwritten by an insurance company, but are "Toyota" for all purposes. You find there will always be an insurance company at the end of a policy, as it is the "risk" of breakdown that you are paying for
