The rad cap is basically a pressure relief valve. It releases built up coolant pressure into the overflow reservoir, instead of blowing hoses off.

always wondered what the spring loaded disc was in the caps well that clears that up

the reason for the overheat was a muddy radiator and fan mesh (there is 2 fans what is the small one for)

The small fan in front of the rad is an electric back-up fan for when the coolant temp gets above 90 degrees, e.g. when stuck in traffic or slow moving when off-road.

I assume yours is the 2.4?

Keep speeds below 75mph, the 2.4 doesn't like it any faster for long periods, causes the coolant temp to rise.

Did you re-new the thermostat?

Make sure the heater is set to hot, including the rear one if you have it, when topping up/re-filling the cooling system, and leave the rad cap off for at least an hour before checking the coolant level and topping up if requiered. Re-fit cap when no more coolant can be added.

make sure the overflow reservoir is at least a third full too!

If your air-con doesen't work, or you're not going to ever use/need it, consider removing the condenser rad and fans from under the engine, this will allow more efficient engine cooling and under bonnet heat to escape.

ive heard that some of them have a wax capsual stat not sure on which engine it is

and ive just taken the oil cap off and there seems to be quite a lot of compression which doesnt seem that cleaver

also i cant find any bleed nipples for the water which ive heard there should be atleast 2

Most stats are filled with wax, and don't worry about the blow from the rocker cover most diesels will do that.

No bleed nipples for the cooling, if you drain it just refill very slowly.

Thanks for all the info guys i think its just the radiator that is still full of mud i gave it a pressure wash today purley just on the rad

and braved the run to blackpool and back and it only seems to get hotter than the half way mark on the temp guage

when you let the revs drop and the engine fan idles causing to heat up so im gonna remove the rad and clean all the beaffles

would be a big help if anyone had any pics on this subjuct

Thanks all

rob
