Problem Refueling

Hi all, I'm having a little problem with my less-than-one-week-old diesel Yaris SR. Whenever I try to refuel, the pump cuts out as if the tank is full. I've tried three different stations - two Shell and one Esso. Has anyone come across this problem before? I have managed to fill the tank up by depressing the leaver on the nozzle half way and letting the fuel come out slowly, but this takes an age to fill up!

I've had this problem once. My only conclusion is, that it's something to do with back pressure from the car. If you look down the filler cap, you'll see a metal plate. When you push the gun in, this moves out the way. Try using the gun to hold this open for 3 seconds or so then fuelling.

Okay, I'll give that a try. It's annoying!

I have a diesel too and it can be slow when filling, this is due to the diesel foaming when you fill up,there is a sensor in the nozzle and when it is covered with fuel it switches off, i find if you twist the pump handle to the rear of the car and take it easy you can fill fairly quickly, but the method you describe is fine, you just need a little patience.

Btw? have you tried Shell diesel extra or BP ultimate diesel? i would like the opinions of other diesel yaris owners on using these fuels, or have you tried adding acetone?

Chris.

This is a problem on most Yarii from time to time - our Yaris Blue is the same, at Sainsbury's it clicks sometimes straight away yet the tank is empty. To get round it, I put the nozzle in and turn it a quarter of the way around and then fill it up - it's not 100% fail proof, but it stops it clicking for the majority of the fill up.

Do get a few odd looks standing there with a pump twisted round though

I found the same on the petrol mk1, i have to turn noz hose to rear of car and then it flows ok, but if its vertical you have no end of probs trying to get the UL in, and then when it does get to the top of the neck, it damwell dont cut off then, as my shoe will tell you lol.

Hi... I had the sam problem too, I only had my car a week and when I went to fill it kept doing what yours did.

I found the by shoving the pump right in, it seemed to work ok. Im guessing its something to do with the valves or something. My dad has the same problem with his clio and he said to hold it in pretty tight. Should do the trick :)

Well I shall give all the suggestions a try the next time I refuel! I was pretty sure I shoved the hose in as far it would go - maybe the rubber guard impeded the progress.

Just over a week and over 600 miles driven on a tank and a bit of diesel!

i drive a 1.3 petrol... i get about 40 mpg and it's mainly motorway driving :) I guess, i could get more out of the tank if i eased off on the accelerator a bit more lol

i just find it u turn the bottom of the gun to the back of the car it opens it up a bit more and makes it easier. my rover was like that too.

Well, all I can do is give all the suggestions a try. I had the probably on occasion with my Focus, but I put that down to a dodgy pump. I didn't notice any problems when topping up a diesel Yaris after a day's test drive before returning it to the showroom.

I hold the nozzle out a bit rather than shoving it all the way in.
