Intermittant Alternator

i hit a pothole a while back and smased a wheel.....(see previos posts) and as a result the car was laid up for about 6 weeks.

when i got a new wheel the car was taken out again, but the Battery warning light came on.. (and it was a new battery) along with every other light and the car stopped. the Battery was dead, so i swapped it with the high ampage one from my trusty diesel and all was well, ran a few multimeter tests and alternator was working fine... then Battery went dead, in town.

ran a test and the alternator was not bringing charge.

long story short, checked all fuses,,, replaced all fuses,, checked all wiring and still it seems to charge when it feels like, resulting in three dead batteries and one very ****** off mech...

has any one else had this problem...

all belts are tight

allfuses are good

car has 83,000 miles. n/a

Unless you have some corroded/loose connections to the alternator, it will be the brushes in the alternator. They will be virtually worn down. They make/break contact right at the end of their service life.

You can either swap the brushes and solder them in. (An auto electrician can do this for you). Alternatively buy a brush holder and brush set complete from Mr T.

you will need to remove the alternator to gain access.

Personally I'd buy a complete remanufactured unit. The bearings on the alternator have a habit of failing as rain water drips down onto the unit from the side of the engine block. So if your alternator is original the bearings could be on their last legs..

thank you for that, cheers will have it removed and replaced when the diagnostics are done and confirm it is the alternator.
