Hi

I am looking at purchasing an Avensis T180 which is less that a year old. Last Spring there seemed to be an update which mainly changed the Sat Nav to a new touch screen model. Is it worth paying the extra for a newer model with the new sat nav or are the older once any good. what is the main difference between the 2 systems.

Thanks

Neil

I don't have sat nav in mine (T3-X), but recall from my research at the time of buying that the standard sat-nav (T3-S/T4/T-Spirit/T180) was turn-by-turn on a b/w screen. The full blown full-colour map based, touch-screen, system was around £1500 extra. As everyone was buying Tom-toms instead of upgrading, Toyota then began fitting the full-colour system as standard. If the T4 had come with the touch screen system when I was buying, I would have bought a T4 rather than T3-X.

If I was buying a second hand one now, I would seek out one with the full-colour system.

the full colour screen is really good. i recommend you try and find one with it and you wont be dispointed. get one with the b/w version and you may be ;)

you have pretty much confirmed my thoughts. It looks like I will have to spend a little more to get a newer version. Alternately I could ignore the sat nav and buy a TomTom 910 for a couple of hundred quid and get an older one.

couldnt you haggle a price of a new car down to or below the price of the 2nd hand one? in my experience of buying two avensis i have got way below the price of a 2nd one when i have bought new. i reckon you could easily get a 180 for 2k off the list price if you played a few dealers off each other. i had a quick look our exchange and mart and a 57 plate is 21k on there with 1600 miles.

just a thought....

I had the same problem i wanted full colour touch screen sat nav. I work in the motor trade and put the word around the toyota dealers we deal with and they found me a 2500mile t180 with the old sat nav for 15k on a 56plate. At the time i could of had a 07plate for 17.5k with 5k on the clock. I picked the lower priced car with less miles. To me 2500quid and more miles was not worth it. I'm happy with my choice 177bhp 400nm torque ok its not latest spec but i'd rather save the money.

The colour screen is bigger than the old display, too, I think.

Some good deals available on newish T180s at the moment.

The cheapest T180 I have found with the new Sat Nav is an 07 plate (May 07) at £14999 in a car supermarket with 14000 miles. Seems like a good price and alot less than new.

Hi I have a '56 T180 with a sat nav that pops up out of the dash. It is colour and very easy to see when driving. It also allows the sat nav, radio/multi cd and air con to be separate systems which allows for very easy and intuitive operation. Having driven many cars with the combined sat nav/audio/air con I believe the separates are far superior, the screen is also much easier/safer to view than the touch screen version which requires you to move your head to view the sat nav. I consider the older system to be far better/safer than the newer (cheaper to make - feel that display) system.
