Hey everyone,

Been meaning to register for ages...

Anyway, iv had my Y-reg celica 140, for a year now, had to buy a new engine for it within a month of buyin it cos a piston decided to go thru the bottom brilliant  so got a 24k milage engine for £950 including postage....

Had the engine for a year now, but has now started making kind of a whistling noise constantly, esecially when cold, quite loud also...think it sounds like its comin from the tensioner but not 100% sure, that or its the fan belt. Any advice???

Cheers Andy.

it could be AUX belt slipping AKA fan belt, its on the left hand side of the engine. That makes a squeeking noise though rather than a whistle!! if its not the aux belt then i havent a clue, someone with better mechanical knowledge of cars may be able to help.

have a look at this topic:

and this:

good luck

if the noise only happens when cold its the aux belt and tensioners needs changing, is about a 200 quid job if you use main dealer

while the engine is noisey get a candle or wax crayon let it run on the v part of the belt if it stops get a new belt . please be careful with fingures

tensioners are prone to going but arnt cheap, if you dont want to put your fingers near rotating pulleys (not a good idea) spray on some WD40 if that works change the belt at least if that dosnt fix it you only need to pay for a tensioner

  • 2 weeks later...

That looks like a proper ball ache, I got my AUX belt changed a week back £40 from Mr.T. Mechanic I know charged me £45 for the belt and the fitting. Only cause I did it whilst it was up on his ramp xD, wheel off went at it like that. Seriously, don't fancy going at it from the top it was enough of a ball ache as it was. Also, mine required a special tool for a special bolt we found on the tensioner, idk if thats a common Celica thing or just on the imports..
