Well the 2 main makes seem to be Garmin or Tomtom !!In Europe the main one is Tomtom and in the USA its Garmin.

It really is down to personal choice as to which system displays the information as you like it I suggest you go to the high street and try a few out also if you have any friends with them try and borrow them for the day. The garmin sat nav seems to have a more robust software system than Tomtom and there customer support for Garmin is better than Tomtom .

With Tomtom it seems to be more upgradeable with a lot of useful sites to give help to you .

I will post a couple of links below to have a look at.

John Lewis had the Tomtom 520 music edition for sale at £179 and there was a £20 discount code on the Internet making it £159 in total but the last time I looked they had sold out .The garmin nuvi 250 wide may also be suitable

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/

http://www.yournav.com/

One last thing whichever sat nav system you buy make sure you back up the sat nav so you can do a restore if the software gets corrupted

Check out this mod that Dave made for his new Tom Tom 520. The only thing these manufacturers seem to have missed so far is a cradle with the electrics hard wired. I've got a 910 because I use it in the USA and it is so equiped. The only problem I have is when taking it off the computer docking station when it can hang. The only solution is then to reset it with a paper clip. I keep an eye open for firmware but not seen anything yet - I don't know if anyone else has a solution?

Getting in touch with Tom Tom is just about impossible in my experience. I subscribed to traffic updates and it will not work with my GPRS phone. I tried to email them for advice but the never ever replied. That is bad customer service and they do themselves no favours with that kind of nonsense.

Hello anchorman

They do a Brodit system which is wired in on the site below!!! they are said to be the best mounting system available but are not that cheap !!! they can be removed from your car without any damage and are designed for your exact car

http://www.dsldevelopments.com/

They do say that the problem of the Tomtom freezing is because the disconnect device tab in tomtom home has not been clicked whether that is correct I do not know !!also there is a new version of Tomtom Home available for download now

Yes I've just spent a while looking at the link you showed earlier which looks really nice but I would need to upgrade to a 920.

With regard to the hanging I have tried both ways - with and without pressing eject and it still hangs but thanks anyway. I think its a software problem. That site you showed earlier says there is a new version of Tom Tom home so I will try that.

Thanks again.

;)

Compass £3.99

Map of the UK roads £6.99 or £0 if you can run

Town map - ask the local polis

Or is it just that there's too many motorways in England.......

Stopped in Blackburn last weekend to find where the nearest petrol station is - a guy said "I'm from Nigeria and the petrol station is round the corner"

What more could you ask for - imagine coming all the way from Nigeria just to let me know where the petrol station is - now thats service with a smile!!!

Hi Gwil, had a Garmin for a couple of years. Only trouble I had was updating it, had to get a disc from

Garmin which I could not get to download on to the unit. Gave up and gave it to my niece, her dads a

high flyer in the IT world so hopefully they will fix it. As Anchorman says I now have a TomTom Go 520

which is a belter, and very easy to use and update. Would highly recommend it, and if you have an I pod

you can connect it up to the unit and use the radio link to play through your car stereo.

I believe on the older garmin's you were supplied with a map disc by garmin but had to purchase a unlock code to be able to download the updated maps but I think it has changed now !!.

Bought a basic tomtom a few years ago. Uk maps. Around christmas they usually offer a set of all europe maps for about £30. Best part of it is that you can easily add free points of interest. These are simple files that you copy to the main memory card. eg cameras - marks and spencers - macdonalds etc cinemas etc. So if you go away for the weekend with the kids you can find stuff to do wherever you are..

Used mine all over italy and switzerland - works every time!!!!

also vacuum cleaners are known as hoovers - a brand name, because they were the market leader. Most call nav systems tomtoms so I guess that speaks volumes.

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/ as mentioned above has reviews etc

tomtom for me

Friend of mines got a voice activated Tom Tom not sure what model.he has a strong irish accent and it can't understand him (not a joke) so might be better if Bothy sticks to his compass and maps :D :D

I have tomtom 6 , installed it on my HP Ipaq PDA and never had a fault with it, apart from the maps don't update often enough.

Living in London the roads change layout faster than I change my sons nappies, and often get told to go down one way streets etc.

Had a little chuckle the other day listening to the news on the radio.

Network Rail were asking truck drivers to turn off their Sat Nav's and use their brains instead!

Apparently Network Rails bill of repairing bridges damaged (being hit / getting stuck etc.) by large lorries being sent over small railway bridges by the truckers Sat Nav's, has balloned in the last few years!

This happened the other day (driver had to be cut out of the train and the truck driver was cut out of his cab) because a tipper delivering ballast to the trackside hit a footbridge and knocked it down onto the track. He was travelling along with the tipper still raised.

NR are not best friends with trucks at the moment.

on most nav systems you will find in the setup the type of vehicle you drive... so those truckers should choose lorry and not car...

I don't think my tom tom 910 has that feature but I must admit that there is a need for it.

Cheers bt.

Good evening, new member here...

Would thoroughly recommend Tomtom One, with a mount from Dashmount - that's for the latest model but they also do one for the 4.2. There's a satnav adaptor at Satnav bracket

The mounts don't damage the facia, either

One of the quickie options I thought about was to utilise the desktop nest thingy it comes with to connect to your PC.

You could use sticky velcro so it could be removed quite easily. Also pondered if any body has a newish aftermarket

single din stereo with the USB socket on front, if you used the desktop mount and plugged it in would it charge. :g:

I've had a Navman N20 for about 18months now and it's been great. It was discounted from 200 to 140 at Costco and it's come in very handy over that time. I know TomTom's are popular and also have a good reputation but there are some good competitors out there also. :)

Ive got a tomtom500, and its fab, im a taxi driver and this to me is part of my job it gets me from a-b-c-d etc etc and all the way back again. points of interest are great aswell, i got so many POI i lose count, you can also get the LOW BRIDGES POI, and WEIGHT restrictions POI and install them as easy as 123.

Ive just bought a new dvd for my tomtom of eBay for £32.00 for the whole of europe, used it in spain, and loved it, updated it with all the POI's in europe before i left aswell, so had every doctors, hospitals, chemists, theme parks, pubs, restraunts, supermarkets etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc . love it................................ its also bluetooth, hands free aswell, so its my phone aswell.

if you want a satnav? it would have to be tomtom.

BUT i am after the latest disk for my 53 avensis satnav, just in case i leave my tmtom at home, or it locks ? so if anyone knows anyone ? who knows someone? who has one for sale? like they no longer own there avensis? so dont need there disk anymore? let me know. thanks
