Braking Issues

Hello everone.

I recently bought a Gen 6 Celica (S reg) (know nothing about it yet!)

The car seems in good condition generally apart from a minor braking problem and i hope someone can shed some light on this.

When braking to stop completely, the brakes seem to make a grinding noise and the brake padal "jumps" (as if the abs comes in). It only does it at about 5 - 10 mph when stopping and only for a second or so. Normal and heavy braking at higher speeds seems fine, any ideas??

Are you mechanical? get the wheels of, dont know what it could be, but worse case could be new disks and pads, probably worth the investement. It could also be a loose bolt at the caliper cradle. Get the wheels off and have a check, or simply get the brakes serviced at a garage if you dont do these things yourself.

Could also be as simple as a brake pad that has too much room and is moving in the shoe when you stop?

yeah have a look see, its brakes so dont ignore it

These cars are notorious for needing to change the discs after about 100km's (could be alot more but thats usually the earliest it needs to be done) and thats what it sounds like so i'd recommend getting someone to look at it, the disc might be slightly warped. Its not that expensive to change them, it'd be worth it in the long run!

It's probably the discs mate - I stupidly changed the pads on mine in the hope that the brakes would significantly improve - they did slightly, but the discs still need doing.

Hi folks, managed to get a spare hour and get the front wheels off, (no time for rears yet!)

All seems well, ie, all nuts/bolts tight, discs wearing evenly (not much wear, think nearly new??)

On other brakes from memory the discs are fixed to the hub with a screw, but on this they just seem to be "trapped" between the alloy and the hub by the wheel nuts, is this correct?? I'm waiting for a Haynes type manual so am in the dark at the mo.
