Clattering From Engine

Hi guys

There's a strange noise coming from my engine when accelerating. No obvious loss of poqwer or anything but it start making the noise. I notice it most in third but that may well be a coincidence. Sort of clattering noise it would make if about to stall. (shaking on mounts exhaust rattling sort of thing) Wondering what could be causing it? Has been recently serviced and has plenty of oil etc.

Any suggetions?

open ya bonnett and try wobbling your engine, if it seems like it moves a lot more than you'd expect then an engine mount might have gone, this would upset the tracking of some vital parts and make the noise.

hopefully it isn't anything internal like the head

Yeah me too. I did go into a large pothole last month and dented the wheel. I suppose that could have done the mount in. I shall have to investigate. What would you suggest it would be if it was internal?

maybe a loose cylindar or a miss alignment very expensive so lets hope it aint..

to the clutch test..

put your handbrake on at hard as you can, put it in 1st gear and try and pull off, if your engine moves a lot then it could be an engine mount.. it's easier with 2 people but you have to trust yourself not to run over the person looking at your engine at the time, or make them stand next to the car looking in..

Well that makes it hard as if it was internal or external it would be happening all the time, arer you sure it is comming from your engine?

Are your wheels tight enough? Have you bumped up a kerb lately? i'm now thinking it may be more wheel based not engine.

It sounds pretty engine based. While someone was sat in the car today, they suggested it may be pinking. I have a slightly dented wheel but that was checked by a tyre place recently so the nuts should be ok. Its being replaced this weekend if the wheel arrives anyway. Hopefully im seeing my mechanic friend at the weekend too, so hopefully it shall all be revealed! Will keep you posted and thanks for your help.

I must say it would be a lot easier to fault find hearing the noise so i'm sure he will find it when he hears,

good luck and hope it aint expensive.. if it is.. ask Parts King off here for prices he should get you a good deal!

Apparently it is pinking slightly, due to using standard petrol rather than the higher octane stuff so the engine management is getting upset.

Ive had 2 people say it is pinking now so i would take it as it is. How do you mean a modified ecu? From toyota to stop it happening? Its been a well looked-after car before i got it, so wouldnt expect anything to go majorly wrong with it.

I had a similar sound to pinking (even though it wasn't pinking) on my corolla for months.

I finally found the cause the other week - the drivebelt on the alternator was just slightly too slack (and probably due replacement). Apparently because of the design of the belts used on the rolla (grooved, rather than 'v' shaped) they don't tend to sqeal like normal belts when loose, instead they chirp or rattle.

May be worth checking your belt tension.

Mine is due for a change this year i think it's looking a bit tired. When it gets replaced we will see.

The same also applies for the power steering and air con belts, but I don't think these suffer from the noise as much as there isn't as much distance between the pulleys as with the alternator one.

Mine is all on one belt that does everything except the cams, which are on a chain.

Possibly due to the inlet manifold. My 3dr toyota corolla 2002 started to make a funny noise engine based a little while back. Having spoken to a mechanic at Toyota dealership.

The inlet manifold is made out of plastic and containing a plastic mesh inside the inlet pipes which is known to crack and cause a strange noise during acceleration.

I was told this does not effect the car in any way besides the noise and if i could bear the change in noise it wasn't worth getting the work done

I was told the cost would be approximately £300+

I've got used to the noise in mine.

regards

Jin

When my Corolla MMT Diesel was about 18 months old it developed a rattling noise on revs. The culprit was the alternator need replacing

Hi Andy,

Did you get to the bottom of this problem in the end? I think my vvti is pinking also.
