Steering/suspension/braking Knocking Noise

Rav4 Benitez

Cant believe I have a problem with my Rav already.

I'm getting a knocking noise, sounds like it's coming from my offside wheel/arch. There is a knocking when turning tight to the right, and a slight knocking when coming over speed bumps and kerbs. I'm also getting a knocking when braking. Using my very limited technicla knowledge, I guess that I have a problem with the suspension on that side. Does anybody know what specifically the problem might be, and how much this is going to cost?

you need to get it looked at poss track rod end or lower ball joint jack up car and check play by shacking wheel top and bottom and side to side

If it's either of them problems, is it expensive? Is it advisable to drive on it before it gets looked at?

Manxrav - thanks, yeah I'm a red. Dont know how you guessed that...

A 96 RAV?

well done !!

Knocking on the front suspension -

Wheel nuts loose / missing / nicked

Cat lodged in wheel arch and trying to get out

Depending on mileage, maybe the track rod end as already mentioned - doubt if it would come apart but might break if its really worn..?? You'd be able to tell as already described - moving wheel side to side when its jacked up.

I've not had problems with any other joint on the front suspension despite the 160,000 miles. Did change the shock absorbers as they were leaking. On the front, this can be done without replacing the whole strut.

Around your vintage of car, there was an issue on the front springs breaking and the cars were recalled...mine was before that time. A Toyota dealer will be able to tell you if your car was affected. Someone else recently complained about similar and it was a broken front spring - broken near the top I think...in which case you don't notice any drop in the suspension. If the car is within the recall, and wasn't treated, I think they give you the springs and some labour free.

Other things - loose /worn front wheel bearing; right hip needing replaced?;if your driving over kerbs maybe theres another bush at the front worn?

When was the MOT done or was it a classic Liverpool special?

expense - any garage can do a track rod end - just make sure you get the tracking checked after.

Toyota springs are expensive, so lets not think of that - altho you can probably pick up ones from a scrappy.

Let us know if you find anything, and I can think of more.

If you get stuck, I might be down your way next week.

Thanks very much for that, I have a day off tomorrow so I'll jack it up, and have a shake. I'll put my findings up on here.

Ummm

jacking the car up is ok. Rather than having a shake, I'd try shoogling the wheel directly. Don't get underneath the car tho. You might not know your own strength!
