Corolla Lack Of Power

Hi, I have a problem with my wife's 2003 T2 1.4 VVTi. I drove the car yesterday for the first time in ages and noticed a distinct lack of power and rubbish economy for a 1.4. Told my wife and received this reply 'it's been doing that for a while' etc etc and it's my fault! enough said about that as I don't think I'm the only one that gets blamed for everything. Back to the problem. I looked under the bonnet to see if there was anything obvious but didn't see anything. When I started the car and blipped the throttle there is a quite pronounced sucking noise like a major air intake leak. Has anyone any ideas what this could be. The car had a full service at the main dealer a couple of months ago. Any help would be appreciated.

have you checked the air filter box. Last time my father took his car into get serviced they managed to not close the box properly and the car seemed like it wanted to stall even tho it was stopped with just the engine running. When accelerating hardly any power would get through and herd a loud sucking noise, looked about and realised the filter box wasnt clipped properly :( put the clips properly and solved the problem. Not saying yours is that but from what i gather you gt the same symptons, jus have a look and check hope its nothing major.

Thanks for the info. I did check the air filter box as when it went in for the service I had to tell them to change the air filter as they were not going to do it so i checked to see if they had actually done it. It does sound like that though. I'll be having a proper look tonight. I just thought it's maybe a common problem that somebody knows about.
