Avensis 03 Power Steering Fault

i have a 03 plate avensis on a t3-x model. Recently have been running into some problems with the car regarding the power steering. The p/s light on the speedo turns on when I start up and stays on hence the steering goes stiff. I had a bit of a fight with it and turns out if you disconnect the Battery for say about 20 mins, reconnecting it fixes the problem for a few more start ups. Whilst driving the light does not go on or off.

It cant be a blown fuse as disconnecting the Battery would not rectify the problem. I've heard something about the electric power steering pump. Just wanted some advice before I dive into repair bills.

The MR2 suffers similar problems. Not had it personally but it is due to a sticking relay. Some members have resolved the problem by repeatedly turning the igntion key on/off. (only to illumiate the dash lights) around 20 times. This has freed up the sticking component.(apparently). Worth a try.

Thanks for the reply gazza. Where would I find the relay? And would replacing it make any difference?

Can't help I'm afraid. my Avensis has a belt driven pump. Is it mentioned in the owner's manual in the fuse box??

FOUND IT and fixed the problem. Saved me a fortune. The fuse is located under the bonnet, the long black box on the right hand side. Conveniently it was not plugged in properly, came loose for some odd reason. Anyhowz just needed a push in. The fuse is labeled EMPS. It hit me later, stands for ELECTRIC MOTOR POWER STEERING. Thanks gazza for pointing this lost soul in the right direction :D
