Which One? Xt5?

4.2 XTR D4D (my 3rd) is going soon but this time i (unfortunately) need to change to an automatic. All vehicles i have owned last 7-8 years have been diesel. Am keeping CRV 2007 2.2 cdti.

After some research down to 3 possible choices.

Rav XT5 2.0 petrol

CRV ES 2.0 petrol

Freelander GS 2.2 diesel.

On paper the Freelander wins BUT previous reputation on reliability and build quality plus possible sale of company is not in its favour.

The CRV is O.K. but dont really fancy another one.

This leaves the XT5 as top at the moment. Prefer XT5 to get cruise and spare. Only preferred item missing is rear park sensors. I know Toyota supply a kit as aftermarket fit.

Would like some feedback from any owners of automatic models as this will be my first auto and first petrol for many years.

Thanks.

I used the Previa automatic for a few years - a brilliant car with a mid-engined set up and great performance and road holding. A couple of electrical faults was all I had. However I didn't fancy the front wheel drive new models.

My recent experience of the build quality of the LR is that it is shocking - and that was made in 1963....and I was told by my tyre supplier that the new ones are no better!!! He deals with a lot of off road cars so I suppose he hears the bad bits.

I've no experience of the others - so why not ask for a weekends test drive and thrash them? Plenty of wee roads and fields down your way!

Don't won't to turn you away from the RAV, but haven't we established from the other thread, that the XT5 has lost it's spare wheel?

Dont really know if its suitable but one that turned my head was the hyundai santa fe.2.2 diesel auto .spec to die for,and a 5 yr warrantee.and i think. a great presence on the road and dealers happy to do a deal, please not a nedflanders unless you have deep pockets and a sense of humour

Would have to agree on the Hyundai issue. Today the accountant at my work brought in his new Tucson. Its not as

big or as good as a new Rav but I was surprisingly impressed with it, especially at the price and with the 5 year

warranty.

I've just done the same exercise before I bought my 4.2. I've been on automatics for years and the 4 speed Toyota box is nothing special. Engine is a little underpowered for an auto but I did not buy it to go fast.

Look at the What Car customer reviews about Freelanders.

However, all in all the quality, reliability and size of the Rav won me over. Also, petrol autos are quite cheap 1 - 2 years old.

Whilst buying this I was told by 2 different Toyota dealers that a 6 speed auto box (for both petrol and diesel) is coming to the rav end 08 / early 09.

Good luck.

Peter

Visited Toyota today to test drive a 4.3 auto and was informed diesel auto will be out later this year. Makes decision easier, i don't need to change immediately as both vehicles doing O.K. will just need to mot 4.2. and hopefully just 6 months tax.

Would also hope RAV will be in lower tax bracket than Freelander as even 2.2 manual is much higher than Rav or Honda 2.2 diesels.

Toyota are sometimes a wee bit slow with new models but when they introduce a new model its usually "right first time"

EXCEPT T180 run flats!!!!!

Yes I would like an auto box as well. I drove a Land Cruiser today with an auto box and it was delightful.

I've had two autos in the past, one on my 3 series and one on my Nedflanders V6. The latter being a big engine

made it work very well. You kind of adopt a laid back relaxed driving style. road rage ? whats that.
