Strange Noise

Hi to all u ppl! I just registered in the forum and I wanted to ask if someone knows what is the problem in my car. Around 1/20 startups, my car does a sound like the distribution chain (don't know if that's the right name...) for a second and stops it. As it happens very rarelly I didn't care about it. The other day was raining and the car did that same sound for 2 seconds while running. Can anyone tell me more about it?? The distribution chain was changed at 100000 km. The car has now around 149000 km. Thanks!

Sounds like slight wear of water pump bearing.

You've got the 1.3 Engine (code '4EFE') this along with the standard 1.6 Engine (model code '4AFE') can sometimes wearout the bearings on the water pump .

The sound is usually like a slight rumble just after starting up - and then goes. If this is the case then do NOT worry, along as your coolent level are fine there is nothing to worry about - yet (and as long as you don't mind the slight rumble on start up)! I've known a few do this and they seem to happly rumble on for quite a few thousand miles.

Yes, your pump is worn (if this IS the problem) but unless leaking I would tolerate it.

To check if you water pump is fine/not leaking (it is stituated at the rear of the engine behind the engine cambelt cover area, you will see a belt running to it) shine a touch on the top of the casting on a dry day and when engine is warm (no dampness etc.) and you will see a 5mm hole - this hole is where they start to leak.

While checking that it might be an idea to check the drive belts for general condition as well (but they do normally last a long time and never seem to require adjustment) ... on 1.3 '4E-FE' ENGINE one going to aformentioned water pump and alternator, the other going to power steering pump and air conditioning compressor (if fitted).

Take care.

We call them 'CAMBELTS' or 'TIMING BELTS' - Although after 2000 the corolla does have 'Chain' BUT this does NOT ever need changing.

You state you have a 'G6' this was produced (to my knowledge) from 1997 - 2000 (unless it contined into the 'facelifted' range till 2002?)

Big thanks mate! I'm gonna check it out this weekend!! Anyway, I believe it is not leaking because the car is always on the garage and I would have noticed it. If leaking it would lost water didn't he?

Oh yes if pump is leaking level of water would go down after one week of use.

Sometimes the leak only opens up when the engine is running. I have recently changed the water pump on my G6 and i had a few leaks but wasn't losing water when parked overnight.

Open up the bonnet and run the car in idle for a few minutes then get someone to rev it and you might be surprised.

I know i had a split in the rubber water tube which was pratically invisible.

also the pump had a crack in the underside which dripped slowly when it was off but when the car was running it spurted water all over the place.
