Dual Mass Flywheel

Hello everyone, just joined after reading all the helpful replies people give to those in need, fantastic.

Ihave a 54 plate 52k Rav 4 D4D xt3 and surprise surprise the flywheel has started to "chatter" to us.

Car has been to a local trustworthy garage & as others have found out, this aint gonna be cheap.

Vehicle has full service history by a toyota garage, & was wondering if it is worth going back to our local toyota garage & seeing what can be done.

From reading most of the postings regarding this "common" fault, what should i be saying to toyota.

Thanks upfront to anyone who can help, really appreciated.

Hi Brucey and welcome to TOC, unlucky with the flywheel :( I take it you have read all the threads concerning the

flywheel issues, if you have you will know that the ones Toyota were replacing are now now time barred. You could

stand your ground and see if you can get something out of them, if you do read as much of the issue on here before

hand. Especially Anchormans excellent tutorial on the pinned subjects at top of the main Rav page. Downside is even

if you can get some out of them you will then have to use a Toyota dealer and it will be expensive. I am sure others

will give their opinion shortly, so good luck.

Hi mate

Welcome to the club.

We don't really get any later model RAVs with DMF problems. I don't know why yours has gone or how they have concluded that this is the case (presumably they have past experience). I certainly think it is worth talking to your local Toyota Centre and just asking if they would be prepared to submit a policy warranty claim for you given that although it is more than 3 years old it hasn't done 60k.

If you have a fully stamped up book/Toyota service history the better chance you have. Now having said that, if it has been done elswhere it is still worth a try and if they say no then you will have just broke even with your reduced servicing costs at a 3rd party garage.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Dinna namby pamby aboot pal. Brick thru their windie. Next day say what an unfortunate thing to happen...and it would be terrible if it were to happen again.

Then ask the manager if he's insured for replacement?

He will say yes.

Then you say in that case they have saved hundreds of pounds which could be usefully spent on fixing your car that you have faithfully brought to them for servicing.

If they fail to see reason,

1. ask if you can test a new RAV;

2. take it out then slam it into reverse at 47 mph.

3. Then ask them again if they would fix yours.

4.If step 3 fails, revert to step 1.

Customer is always right!

  • 1 month later...

My 04 XT3 60900 miles just spat the dummy and the DMF is bust - resulting in no drive .... Toyota have extened the FOC repair to 60K and basically your car should be covered for free. Give customer relations (assuming you are in the UK a call - 01737 367600) and tell them the problem. I have been turned down for the 900 miles I am over the 60K... grrr! still in escaltion mode on that one...

However, even fixing this issue, will mean that you will be sitting at circa 100K miles the next time Mr DMF comes to visit...

The Toyota fix was done to replace a faulty manufactured part. The new one you have fitted should last much longer. Theres lots of posts on this topic already, recently, so I won't go into that. However as the DMF concept is used in many cars and across many manufacturers, then its a concept which is common and fitted to allow use of diesel as a fuel option whilst allowing good performance - rather than what i get from our aged landrover diesel. With diesel, there's a trade off between the savings on fuel, against some of the complexity of the modern diesel engine. maybe why diesels cost more to buy??

The DMF issue is unfortunate, and very costly and things like 900 miles OTT seem very unfair. I've mentioned a few times, but when i bought my 3 door RAV4 in 1994 with all the extras, it cost over £21,000. 14 years later, the price has hardly changed so i feel somewhat bitter. then the price of tyres then 14 years ago was £200 a tyre as only Dunlop made that size. Now people bitch about £160 !!

It is an argument that the DMF on the RAV4 was not up to the job. Trades description comes into it and our woeful legal system makes it difficult to take much action. At the end of the day, Toyota suffer as they lose customers and of course more who might have thought about buying a diesel RAV. By everyone making Toyota aware of the displeasure might make them review their policy....why do they change springs on 1995 RAV4s 12+ years on??

I wish you luck and confidence to argue your case,

Ian

Apologies up front, MY 02 rav had its 5yr 50,000 service at 4yrs 11mth and 23000mls,the next day i set off on a 1000 ml trip. i felt that i needed to press the clutch further than usual .and on return took it back to MrT.who informed me my clutch pressure plate was on its way out but not to worry as it could last another 10000, Quoted me £1089 to fix. took car to clutch specialist who Quoted £600, but informed me last one they did needed new DMF..first i had heard of one> took car to 2nd MR .T who said it might just need bleeding charged me £45 to do so, whilst they had it on ramp they had heard a tinkling from bell housing sugested fly wheel was braking up quoted £1689 to fix and could pack up at any moment, contacted mr T customer services, because car is now 5yrs and 1wk old would not honour warantee, even though i had reported and had fault confirmed be-fore 5yr deadline. then ordered new car,as iwas selling my old car to my brother iwanted problem fixed so contacted MR T ,threatend to cancel new car,and was told they would cover cost of parts £600+ as a good will gesture..I now have a new car and my brother has a new flywheel,so persistance can get results although this rather longand boring story has tarnished my faith in Toyota as a company and my local dealers

My understanding is that you need to place the matter in the hands of your dealer who should fight your case for you. Gestures are made for vehicles that have gone well over the 60k mark. It sounds like the dealer can't be bothered.

Incidentally, this vehicle should be fitted with the modified fixings (does it have round spot lamps?).

sorry anchorman. if you are referring to my post my car had squarer spots, the more ihear about this DMF issue the more annoyed i get even though i no longer own that vehicle, as Bothy says in one of his posts they can recall a fault on a 1995 car But will not honour a fault on a 5yr old vehicle with full MrT service history and only 23000mls on the clock. i will be looking elsewhere when and if i can ever afford to change my car. :(
