Avensis T Spirit Bad Fuel Consumption

Hi, I bought a brand new 2006 Avensis T SPIRIT with all the extras. Just 3 days after driving (only 100 miles) the front drivers seat leather collapsed and the metal of the seat was showing. I took the car back and the done something to it. Then 2 weeks after it happened again. This happened on 3 occasions and then at the end they said they will replace the whole seat. However, where the leather collapsed the creases were still there. I was assured that the seat was replaced. Also, when I went to buy the car the delaer offered my the extra feature that would work with the full colour sat nav that would allow me to have up to date traffic info. But a few after I tried to use this feature and could not find it. I called the dealer and asked them about this and they said it is on the sat nav but needs to be set up. I then moved and asked the Oxford dealer and they said it does not come with this sat nav model.

A year ago I noticed this noise coming from the engine bay (knocking noise). I took the car back and they said it was the timing belt for the AC. They replaced the belt.

Now a few weeks ago my husband drove my car and he noticed when you accelerate off a very loud banging noise from the engine. I took it back and they tested it and said that something broke and the car was not road worthy. They replaced a part and said this was why the car was making the noise and was a direct result for the car being so bad on fuel consumption.

A full tank (50litres) when driving locally only gave me between 210 to 220 miles. So, after the 2nd job was done I topped up my car and now I am getting 180 miles from a full tank. My husband had a C43 AMG MERCEDES and when he put 50 litres of fuel in and drove locally (driving hard) he got 300+miles. I have told the dealer but they are no help. They keep saying that this consumption is OK for local driving.

Please could someone help me in this. The car is very expensive on fuel. I bought the car brand new and have had problems from day one. I paid £24,000 and since having th car I have spend so much money just on fuel.

I would like to thank you in advanced for reading and responding to my problem. I am very grateful for any help and advice.

Warmest Regards

Lina

First of all, sorry to hear you've had so many problems.

The 16 MPG you are currently achieving is ridiculous, even if you drove everywhere at full speed.

You didn't say what engine your T-spirit has (i'm guessing it's not a diesel)

If I were in your position I would make a case for the car so far ( all correspondence and paperwork etc. from Toyota)

I would then take the paperwork to the manager of your local dealership and try and remedy the situation that way.

Failing that I would try another dealer as your car is still under warranty and you definitely need it sorting before the warrranty runs out.

I would contact Toyota UK if these 2 options don't work, keeping a copy of all paperwork to and from them.

Many dealers try and brush customers off as if it's not their problem (like it's all in your head)

You've spent a lot of money and deserve better.

Here's hoping you get satisfaction, don't give up.

My 2006 avensis which is 2.0 petrol vvti is consuming 11 littres per 100Km when I drive it in city with (always) congestion (see Athens). This is the equivalent of 21.3 MPG. So my guess is that a 1.8 littre vvti will definitely be better than 21.3 MPG even in the worst case...

I had the 2.0 petrol version TSpirit and it certainly was not good on fuel consumption. In winter town driving it dropped to the low 20s mpg and even gentle driving out of town would only get me the high 30s. Use the pedal too hard and and you could nearly see the gauge go down which is a bit galling because the engine needs revs to get any performance. Having said all that you should get better than 16mpg at any time.

I had one or two engine problems with misfires and to be fair to the dealers they did fix it and they did work hard to improve the fuel issue but it took a long time. The driver's seat leather was always a problem though the seat didn't actually collapse. The later model is a lot better so this must have been an issue for a few people.

The 2007 diesel is a great car though, better performance and very good economy. I've had no complaints at all in the last 12 months.

Good luck - keep a log of the problems and don't get fobbed off at the dealers.

I have a 1.8 T4, automatic gearbox.

I experienced on 2 occasions a very loud bang noise pulling off from the traffic lights.

My fuel consumpion has increased by about 20% but not sure if it is attributed to the bang noise which I haven't heard again.

(whole car shook, like massive gear jolt)

Even !Removed! footing it, feathering the gas and coasting down hills and to junctions only gets me 31-32 mpg where normally I would expect 38mpg (measured manually by brimming the tank)

In urban I normally expect 24-25mpg on the display, it was showing around 17-18mpg :-S

Hi,

I can agree as well.I have got an Avensis 2003 automatic,2.00 litre petrol,T4.I have about 12 litres per 100 km in the town or around but when drive on M3 or other for more than 20 minutes with about 80 miles an hour and 3000 revs it goes up to 35-38 mpg(8 - 9.5) litres it become economical just.I would expect more from Avesnis but it is not possible.Beside my ECU shows me only about 270 miles range when full so it crap.

Any other ideas.

Wojciech

could have been detonation / miss fire and have damaged 1 cylinder..

get car compression tested..
