53 T Spirit D4d - Is This Td Or Not?

Hi,

I was recently getting some insurance quotes for when my renewal is due to get an idea if I'll pay more than I did on my old 02 Avensis 1.8 GS VVTi as I've had to change mid term (a learner wrote me off). Anyway, I noticed on one site when I put my reg in it listed a T Spirit TD D4D? I didn't actually think it was a turbo diesel (doesn't seem to drive like one to be honest, super smooth and economical, but not a speed demon, but that wasn't what I wanted anyway, with all the safety camera's there's little point). So I'm kinda curious now whether my Avensis is a turbo diesel or not, and if so, around what speed should the turbo kick in? I'm driving to Hull tomorrow so I'll see if I can tell on the motorway! Taking my Mum though, and she doesn't like me to drive fast (not since she was in my last car when it went crunch). Can anyone help?

Hi BenN74,

I too worry about what you can see. And what the Insurance companies see when you detail your particular car. My wife has a Volvo S80 2.9 SE and that was listed on the internet as a T5 (T denotes Turbo) All the information for UK registered cars originates from the records at DVLA and they are only as good as the cretim who has punched the details in, in the first place.

If you don't have the relevant documentation from when you made your purchase then get it confirmed by a Toyota dealership and write to the DVLA returning your Log Book, if necessary, pointing out their indiscretions and like us you should get a new V5 with the correct details. Once this filters through, you should then find that you car is listed correctly and the insurance companies will quote you for the car you own and not a different specification. After-all, you pay good money for insurance so why pay for something you haven't got?

In the meantime, and should your insurance fall for renewal, be sure to make it clear that the car is what it is and if it's not the forced-induction variety, ensure you don't pay through the nose for your premium by way of explaining that the details they are accessing are not correct.

HTH

In answer to your question Ben, your car is a turbo-diesel.

The 2.0 D4D Avensis is not very quick admittedly so I can see why you wondered ;)

To be honest I think you'd struggle to buy a diesel family car in the last 5 years that wasn't a TD.

Thank you both for your replies, I appreciate the info, I think your probably right about all modern cars being turbo diesels, but they usually make sure it has a TD Badge so you know, and they can sell more, at a higher price! At least I now know I'm not paying for something I shouldn't be! I only bought the car last week so my V5 hasn't arrived as yet, I'll be interested to see if it does state TD D4D or just D4D like most listings! Thanks again!

PS acceleration aside I am very impressed with the car, compared to my last petrol Avensis VTi GS '02, and even the courtesy car I had (Modeo Titanium TD '07) it's super economical on diesel, and a very smooth, safe feeling ride! I'm glad I stuck with Mr T now, and paid the extra for a new shape D4D!

The turbo is set to kick in at approx 2200 rpm I believe, the torque curve is such that the engine runs out of steam at about 4000 rpm so a total waste of time revving it any higher, the one thing I had trouble with when I first got mine(1st diesel) was trying to rev it lke a petrol

Ah, brilliant, that was the info I was looking for, turbo kicks in around 2200 ish. You're dead right about the difference between petrol and diesel aswell, my old petrol Avensis did rev much higher, too high sometimes, this one gives much more power with less revs. :D

Of course the easiest would be to lift the bonnet open and look for the d4d signs :P

Thanks for your input cmia, I appreciate all comments. But I can't see how I'd know my car was a TD because it had a D4D sign on the engine? Am I missing something??

becase all avensis are

TD

you should be able to see the turbo.. on your car.

and hear it spool up.

unless it is your first diesel..

andyou think the noise is normal

Ah right, thanks, the wikepedia article gets a bit technical for me I'm afraid though.

My Avensis is technicaly the first diesel car I have owned, but I have driven another, it's kinda messy.

I passed my test on 16th December last year, went out and bought a petrol 2002, Avensis 1.8 GS two days later on 18th, which I was very happy with. Unfortunately a learner driver pulled out on me after only 6days on 22nd December 2007 and wrote the car off completely.

The insurance company gave me a Mondeo Titanium TD 2007 as a courtesy car, very fast for a diesel, faster than my friends 2003 2ltr Golf GTI amazingly.

Anyway, when the insurance paid out I bought myself the D4D T Spirit I now own, the pick up is no where near the Mondeo (but as that was a 2007 I didn't expect it to be) a friend asked me if mine was a turbo diesel, and I didn't know so I thought I'd ask my fellow Toyota owners on here.

As for spooling noises, I'm too busy watching out for killer learners to be listening to my engine. lol.

I don't know much about cars, so sorry if I sounded like I was being funny, I genuinely wondered is all.

Thanks for all the info, I'm now happy, and since the above posts I have been paying attention, and yes, around 2200 it does suddenly take off, so my turbo must be kicking in. I didn't know it made a noise aswell, I'll have to have a listen for it!

Thanks again.
