Hi All,

Been a member here for some time but this is my first post so be nice :P

I have a TSport on a 03 plate

Had to drive up to Edinburgh from Manchester at the weekend and when I arrived the drivers side front wheel was roasting (too hot to touch) :o . Took it into Western Toyota in Edinburgh who have just told me the front brake calliper was seized and has damaged the brakes so I need new front brake pads and disks, the calliper needs fixing and it is STONGLY advised that the rear brake pads and disks need to be replaced as well. How much - £717 thats how much :ffs: :censor:

Would take it to an independant garage but don't know of any here in Edinburgh that I can trust.

Going to get the work done and then get my Mechanic mate to look at it when I get back to Manchester.

Cheers for listening

i looked into set of front pads and discs the parts would be 120 ish then the labour to fit, i dare say you may cut that price down to nearer to 3-400 mark all in at a guess

I had my rear brake discs and pads replaced by an independant garage in wallsend for a reasonable sum of £145. The rear offside caliper had seized prior to this and it was serviced and freed up by the same guys for £40.

£185 for everything is a good price!

Don't be ripped off by dealership prices.

Just been in contact with my Manc. Mechanic Mate and he recons for the bog standard Toyota Corolla parts -

Front brake pads - £53 inc VAT each

Rear brake pads - £47 inc VAT each

Front brake disks - £38 inc VAT each

He couldn't get a price for the rear disks :help:

So for parts should be about £350, so if it takes 45 minuits per corner and 1 hour to repair the siezed calliper, toyota charge about £122 per hour :crybaby:

I want to be a mechanic when I grow up

I will learn :help:

In all honesty the Toyota dealer did do a full check on the car and suggested that 1/2 litre of oil was required apart from that my car is fine.

Love the car by the way, have been enjoying lift for nearly 5 years now and it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

This is the first mechanical problem I've had with the car since new and its comming up to 50K miles  the passenger door speaker is on its way out - don't get any tunes from it unless the volume is on full blast.

Thats a crazy price. Are you in the AA/RAC? Get them to stick it on a flatbed and drive you home and get your trustworthy mechanic friend to do it for you.

Just read this post, as the Workshop Controller at a Toyota Center I can understand how some people think that we are charging too much, in my defence I ask you to consider that we dont set the prices.

If we get a vehicle in and it requires work we report, we don't make up faults neither do we make them.

I'm not moaning that all customers are penny pinchers, just saying that my technicians and all staff here will go out of our way to help you!

If you do go for non genunie parts bear in mind also that if you do get cheaper parts, they are cheaper for a reason, ie, they may last a less amount of time so on contrast with genuine you may very well be paying more!

cheers

Chris

I'd be happy (well not happy but you know what I mean!) with paying for original parts rather than pattern parts but Toyota dealers labour rates are a joke, especially when (in at least 2 Toyota garages I've seen) the 'technicians' doing the work are mostly just young kids with very slack jaws and no customer service skills. Find a local reputable garage with fully qualified time served 'mechanics' and you'll save some cash and get a better job done. Have a look on goodgaragescheme.com to find a decent local place near you.

ALL labour rates are ludicrous now no matter which dealer you go to, you are better going to a specialist after your warranty has ran out for servicing, however, simple repairs like brakes can be done yourself even by someone with limited mechanical experience, I have black diamond drilled and grooved disc for the front and rear with EBC red stuff pads all round waiting to be fitted when i get a spare 2 hours(although I used to be master tech for Volvo Truck/Penta and have 2 first class degrees in engineering) they were £500 delivered from Demon Tweeks.

Get yourself a set of front and rear 3g discs and black diamond pads front and back for about £350 all in great brakes for the money. I've never changed brakes before and i fitted my own when i got them about 4 months ago theres nothing to it. Get the guide on how to do it off here and save yourself 360quid.

yeh,but the toyota pads and discs are rubbish, mine are screeching on the rear on my compressor which has only covered 4,500 miles, and bail out brake dust at an alarming rate.also the rear brake discs were skimmed at pdi at 3,000miles?

I'm not really complaining about the price (well a bit like Chris81). I know you will always pay more at MrT and whenever I've used MrT I've always had good service.

To be honest, after nearly 50K miles and this is the first real major problem, I consider myself very fortunate, and if I don't have to spend another £700 in the next 5 years (services excepted  ) I'll be very happy. Just came as a shock, but I recon for the same work I would have to pay about £500 anywhere else.

Probably won't keep the CTS for another 5 years :crybaby: but at the moment haven't seen anything that gets my juices flowing quite like lift.
