"Toyota will be thinking big but showing small at next month’s Geneva motor show.

It will be giving centre stage to the ground-breaking Toyota iQ, it’s new three-metre city car. The iQ appeared at the 2007 Frankfurt show as a concept, and will be shown at Geneva in production-ready form; in other words, exactly how it will be when it shows up on British roads in early 2009.

However, it will also be showing a small 4x4 – a sub-RAV4 model designed to rival the forthcoming Mini Crossman and Skoda Yeti – which will be called the Urban Cruiser.

Toyota Urban Cruiser

Autocar published spy photos of Toyota’s second Geneva show offering late in 2007. The Urban Cruiser, according to company insiders, will share a production line with the Japanese market Toyota Ist and the Scion XD. It looks very much like its cousins too, but has a new grille, and new headlights that better befit Toyota's European market range.

It’s likely to be powered by a 105bhp 1.5-litre engine mated to a continuously variable transmission, and be available with a choice of front- or four-wheel drive."

I think it looks good, if Toyota stick the 1.4 D4D engine in it they'll be on to a winner

Do you think it'll come with run flat tyres...? :D *gets coat*

It looks like the Terios platform (4.2 floorpan and running gear) especially with the 1.5 petrol.

The Terios is very under-rated.

  • 1 month later...

Is this model a revamp of the Toyota Ist (pronounced east) that is available in the Japanese domestic market and badged as a Scion in the US?

Had the latest issue of 4x4 and MPV driver sent over today from Uk and there is a good write up about the Urban-cruiser in it. As they write it,s a fingernail longer than a Ford Fiesta and smaller than the Terios!!!! Cricky it does sound a diddy car.

Length is 125mm shorter

Width is 30mm wider

Height is 150mm lower

These dimensions are compared to the Daihatsu Terios

Hi Clare,

I would guess as it's a 4x4 it will be built in Japan like RAV4 and Land Cruiser.

Why (out of interest) do you hope it's not built in France?! Yaris is widely considered to be one of the most reliable cars in the industry?

Now you come to mention it Toyota is opening a new production facility in Canada for the US and Canadian markets- Purely for Rav4 production. This would obviously free up space for Urban-cruiser production.

Regarding "French-built", It is my own personal opinion, I don,t think they produce cars as well built as the Japenese, including Yaris and Aygo,s. Probably a throw back to when my Dad had a Renault 5 and it disintigrated within 4 years from brand new.

I know this will probably be a stupid question, from an ignorant (and sometimes grumpy) old man, but I thought a Terios was a Daihatsu????

Hi mate, Toyota own a large chunk of Daihatsu, and so share some parts / designs.
