Cam Timing!

Hi Folks well im new to this forum so hope you can help.

I have a V reg Avensis 1.8 (with cam belt). It has recently been dying on power and often wont rev over 3000 rpm, I changed the fuel filters & seemed ok for a week. it then started again but sometimes 3000rpm then 4000 etc. two weeks ago it blew all the water out . the AA gas tested & said the head gasket was ok, it was refilled & went on for another week ok(Ish)then it did the same all the lighta came on so i stopped. Main agent said thehead was warped & needed a new one. I got the old one skimmed & re fitted it with a new belt but it would not start, not even fire. I checked the cam timing & had got the inlet 45 degrees out. re set it & still nothing. I have now been advised by another garage that the valves arer bent!

The engine still wont fire & i thought it was a none interference fit on the valves anyway.

any suggestions would be greatfully recieved.

many thanks

Clive

engine is interference above 4 k of revs

things you need to ask

1- does it crank

2 - does it get fuel

3 - is the coils or distributor making a spark ..

If yes to above

I would start by commpression and leak test on the head..

Thanks for that. yes cranks ok, good spark, appears to overfuel--6 turns and its flooded.

engine has not yet run. do you think timng being out with this engine cranking over would be enough to bend the valves?

Yes

I would buy a compression tester from Halfords..

and test each cylinder

No compression is cyliders = nothing to burn.

compression test each cylinder, that way we know if any of the valves or pistons have suffered any damage due to the cam being set incorrectly.

If compression ratio come back good then problem is else where, we can then diagnoise that easier.

1 step at a time :)

Compressions tested....about 80% down on all cylinders!!

No compression = no start :(

only thing you can do is take the head off and take a peek inside.

You may be better off with a replacment head/valves or engine
