Stone Chips

washed +polished rav the other day, but spotted its first stone chip on bonnet, whilst out and about came accross, a"CHIPS AWAY" van all set up in a lay-bye, so pulled in and this chap started walking round my immaculate car with his clipboard and pen out, when i told him i had only one chip on my bonnet' he did that sharp intake of breath thing that tradespeople do before they kick you in the G***ies. on seeing my little chip he said thats the sort of thing we would do as a freebie if we were doing other work on your car, but not worth doing on its own, in any case chips on the bonnet are awkward, and i'd be better off buying some paint from Halfords and doing it myself..So i conclude from this "CHIPS AWAY" dont do chips..and Halfords don't do Carbon Quartz.. So picked up my 2 little bottles of touch up £6-53p from Mr T. Now has anyone any good Tips for doing this before I turn my car into something that looks like it has Beubonic Plague..Cheers :(

First of all, forget about using the brush that is supplied with the touch up stick! It is impossible not to apply too much paint using these brushes. Instead, get yourself a cocktail stick and pick up a tiny blob of paint with it and 'push' it into the chip. The trick is not to try and fill the chip in one go. Far better to under-apply than over-apply. I usually tackle stone chips after each wash, and it takes about 3 applications before it's done. Good luck!

Don't do what I did this weekend....turned a chip into something that now requires a complete bonnet respray! :(

Also Carbon Quartz, used the touchup paint and was reasonable pleased with the result. But, being the perfectionist and because I'm about to sell it, I thought that I'll give it a going over with an orbital polisher (proper thing for those that know called a Porter Cable) just to 'flatten' the slightly protruding blob of paint. Cutting a long story short I 'burnt' the paint! It's an area about 3" x 2" and definitely not 'fixable' without a respray

At least the new owner, when I do eventually sell it after it has been done, will be getting something perfect but still a rather costly mistake on my part.

Good Luck

Still got the Aston Chatman and it's a keeper....possibly forever!

The ML is actually quicker 0 to 60 than the Vantage.....so even the word 'outrageous' is possibly an understatement

You're not wrong....thinking of getting one installed in the garage....can't seem to find one with the right colour combination to match the garage though :P

Do you really want to have to have your entire bonnet reprayed like me?? :D Sorry, I'd just have to get the Porter Cable out again and you'd regret it!

Just the wife or you as well? ;) Send me a pic, I might be able to accommodate her :D :D :D

Just for anyone interested in these things, full bonnet respray has been quoted as £375 for a T180 in Carbon Quartz. The info might assist someone else further down the line.

Well I guess thats it chaps (& chapesses) as I'll not be putting any more miles on the RAV until it's sold so nothing much more to discuss. If you happen to pass, or be passed, by an ML or an AMV8 give me a wave......it'll be reciprocated

Amazing car but bet you're not on first name terms with your Merc dealer. I can think of many terms I could name our local Merc dealer (OH has a Merc) but none are repeatable here - I'd be banned from future posting!
