I have a 93 landcruiser which sees occasional dirt and snow. It has manual hubs fitted, work fine when offroad, but would'nt auto hubs be easier when driving from slush to tarmac and back so can grive without stopping every 2 minutes? Not a serious off roader but want the option and driving through the mountains you never know when you might come across a mud slip etc. any help mucho appreciato.

You dont have to get out and unlock them, just shift it out of 4wd. The hubs only connect the wheels to the axle,by taking it out of 4wd you have disconnected the front wheels from the drive eliminating wind up.

When you back in town, you can unlock them

Im lazy ,mine have been locked in for years. I just take it out now and again for long trips

A few decades back all 4wd had their hubs locked in permanently. Then FWH were availble as an aftermarket device to save some fuel and wear on the front diff.

Then car companies began to fit them as standard
