Hi

Finnaly picked up my 4.2 xt5 4d and just done about 500 miles.

I am impressed by the handling for this type of car and the fuel consumption is great.

Only concern at the moment is the noise of a bird chirping in the dash every time you go over a bump. I cannot belive that the previuos owner put up with this racket!

I have had a look on the forum and favorite looks like the plastic outer panel rubbing on the windscreen. I have given it a good wiggle but cannot make the same noise. I will have to have a good look at it in the week.

It has covered 10000 miles and just had its 2nd service at a main dealer.

The water pump had to be replaced under warranty as the service sheet said it was leaking.

I contacted the dealer to check this was correct and to ask if the cam belt had been changed as I would have expected this to have been done with having to remove the old one to get at the pump.

I was informed that it was not and that toyota do not recomend fiting a new belt until 60k

Anybody know if this is correct ?

Cheers

It is correct. The belt should be done at 60k. However, I would never fit a water pump or any other belt driven component without fitting a new belt regardless of the mileage.

I don't know of any specific cause of a squeek on this model but no doubt somebody will let you know if they have any experience. If it is associated with the outside you could cover it with soapy water around the plastic trim and take it for a run. On the inside some silicone polish around the facia abutments might help pinpoint it.

Bothy would probably release a cat inside to hunt for the bird.

Good luck and enjoy your new purchase!

NV004-01.pdf

cowl_fix.htm

Always a good site to find these things....shame we don't have one on here.....We could speak with Kelly the administrator over at R4W and get a link to there's from the TOC site....

Thanks for the replys.

I am of the same opinion as to changing the belt as I would never chance reusing a old belt.

Just had a look at the links about the dash noises but it looks like it might be for older ravs.

Will have a look at it today.

Cheers

Have been in trade for many years (25 years as service manager) until i retired. All manufacturers advised against refitting a cam belt, with Ford and Vauxhall can assure you a new belt was always fitted if removed for any purpose. Ford would reject a claim for a water pump if new belt was not fitted, reason "improper repair".

I woud certainly talk to dealer abot this, ask if he will guarantee belt fo 60k or 5 years and any consequential damage.

Enjoy your new RAV

I will be having a word with my local dealer next week as the dealer who serviced the car are about 150 miles away.

I was not too impressed with the work they did as I had to top up the expansion tank as it was nearly empty. Whilst I was checking the engine over to check if there was still a leak because of the low water level I found the top pas pump bolt loose and hanging out over the belt !

deer2at140mph.jpg

Hit at 140mph, look how it went straight through the grill, similar thing happed to my brother driving, deer ran out from the hedgerow, wrote me brothers car off, and nearly him.

What a mess.

Sorted the bird noise problem by the way.

Just got a rag on the end of a screw driver and hooked it under the rubber that sits on the screen.

Then just run it the lengh of the screen a couple of times to wipe the crud away and hey presto the bird is no more.

Also got onto toyota about changing the belt and they said they would not pay for a belt on a water pump change under warranty.

Just to make sure they have logged my concerns about the belt being refitted and gave me a ref no.

Cheers

What engine has your RAV got spyro? I thought all the later ones had timing chains rather than cambelts.
