After a rather hairy drive to work this morning decided to park my car into a ditch! Hit the brakes as I pulled into my parking space only to hit ice, hit the high kerb, bounced off kerb, rolled down ditch and landed on top of a shrub!! Jumped out the car and ran out to car park and then fell over on the ice!!

Managed to get the car back onto the car park after some hard work and havent really looked at bodywork for damage, possible wee stain on driver seat, however if there will be any damage it wil be underneath, not sure what to do? leave it as long it drives ok? get it checked? check it myself? - how? any advice would be great.

Went looking for sympathy from by boss as I was rather shaken to find out they have decided not to come into work due to the weather and I live further away than them!

Also now I have rather bad back and neck pain..grrr....and been told after I sent assistant to put grit down that they are not liable if there is no grit but they are if they do, that sounds backwards??

do you think it worse, better or makes no difference in ice if driving a very light car?

please drive carefully!!!

Very sorry to hear about your misfortune and hope your aches and pains soon get better. ;)

I would definately get the steering geometry checked, sooner rather than later as you could have damaged a wheel, tyre, track rod, drive shaft or all of these. Also, your tracking could be out of true which will cause excess wear to your tyres, not to mention the handling of your 'Blue'. Your local tyre garage should be able to check all of this for a nominal fee.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I advise a full 4 wheel laser alignment. For this you will need a specialist bodyshop and not a simple fast fit tyre operation - I'd even suggest a visit to the Toyota dealer as they will have all the correct settings for the car.

Many years ago I slid into a kerb at quite a low speed. Realised I'd knocked the tracking out and went for a two wheel job. All reset, but a few hundred miles later I noticed the tyre wearing on the inside edge so suspected I'd done more damage than I thought. Took it to a Ford bodyshop (car was a Fiesta) who diagnosed a bent lower suspension arm. This was replaced and a full aligment undertaken and the car as fine after that.

Get her checked out by a mechanic......better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks on closer inspection no damage to the bodywork I dont think, but tracking/something doesnt feel right at all so will take it kwik fit me thinks. Back still hurts :(

sniffed the seat, think it will be ok Calisto, bit of febreeze :lol2:

TVOR - well i will admit faster than I perhaps should have been, I do 60ish mile commute everyday round back roads and was super careful on roads but was lulled into a false sense of security when I hit works very large empty carpark and its like brick patio so you just do not see any ice, so yes erm probably a bit to fast for icey conditions  - if its any kind of defence i wasnt the only member of staff to go in the ditch and another lady skidded from one end of car park to the other

Sorry to hear about your accident and you're a bit sore :(

Hate to jump straight into cliches but at least it wasn't TOO serious and you'll learn from it. I've been out plenty in Hugo on black ice and learned the hard way (not with a crash as such, but a near miss can be just as effective  )

Let us know how you get on Kwik Fit and I hope you feel better soon :)

Sorry to hear about your accident Sarah! Plenty of rest and painkillers for your back and neck!

Hope the damage to your car isn't too serious. Though like everyone says, def get it checked out my reputable garage, my bf got knocked into a curb in his car and although it seemed only his alloy was damaged, it actually knocked his alignment all out of wack. Not technically the same thing but something that doesn't look too bad can hide something more sinister.

and not kwik fit. they cant even balance tyres properly.

awww sorry you had an accident sj :( know how much you love ur car...

glad it wasnt worse and hope its all sorted really sharply and cheaply

Also agree not Kwik Fit - they will do a basic tracking check for about £20 - this is not what you need. It needs to be at a bodyshop up on a ramp so all the suspension elements can be checked.

Yes that does sound a bit dense doesnt it :lol2: and I was waiting for someone to say that!!, but if I am honest I actually thought my brakes had failed

because there was no evidence of ice on the car park till I fell over on it :lol: then it clicked!

Ah well, nevermind not serious, but I shall not be underestimating icey conditions again!

I did phone toyota up today on advise of getting it checked out and they offered me a free safety inspection, so I took in and they said tracking etc was ok but the impact on the edge of carpark had damaged both my front tyres so cost me £100 to replace them :( and some how my valve cap thingys got sacrificed too. Expensive lesson learnt!!

They did also offer some therapy to help me get over my unhealthy obsession with my car..:lol2:

p.s. new tyres are great!!

p.p.s and they cleaned it inside and out too.. woooohooo... it was very dirty..lol

sucks to hear about this :( hope everything concerning yourself and the car works out :)

edit: posted before ur post :X gd to hear youve got it sorted now :)

Glad to hear your car is OK!! Bet you're a very happy bunny

Sorry to hear about your little incident, Sarah, but glad you've got it sorted.

Just be carefull on your new tyres, as they will need bedding in for a bit, to take the shine off.

It's been icy here the last few days. I got wheel spin in third gear the other evening on the way home, so I left the car at home and walked the next day. Very bracing, it was only -8 :o

I'd hate to bump my Aygo. I don't even like getting it dirty.

Notice how I called it an "it" and not he/ she :P

How many miles had the tyres been on the car?

Posted

Thanks Devilish and Tim and yes will take it careful on new tyres.

Tyres were at 12k so am not too bothered as would have had to replace them soon anyway, just a bit sooner than planned.

p.s. Tim ur cars a she ;)

12k on them makes it less sour ;)

I'm glad for you it was only the tyres,
