Using Sat Nav When Moving

Greetings all.

We have just got a new XT5 and whilst I know you shouldn't be messing with the Nav screen when driving ;) ...it's a pain that the passenger can't on your behalf. I've found some details from an American site about a Prius hack but wondered if anyone has any info?

We also have a Discovery 3 and the hack on that is really useful. There's bound to be one for the Rav if someone is in the know...

Cheers,

H

Hello H,

Welcome to the sometimes warped TOC. Hope you enjoy the XT5, best model IMHO ;).

Yes it is possible, I've done it, and it is similar to all those septic mods. There's a brief description in this thread if you scroll down a bit (15th Nov posting):

I promised Fruitbat, I would post more info, but I've been delinquent and still not go around to it, mainly because I haven't removed the sat nav again since. shame on me! :nono:

Cheers

Here's a bit more info. I used these switches:

mainly because I already had them and fitted them here:

The other switch is to fool the head unit in to reverse, so I can use the reverse camera input as a video input. Please ignore the nerdy/geeky amateur radio shown. :D

You probably don't want these switches, they don't quite fit the cut out and you have to take a bit of plastic out at the rear of the trim panel. They are also a double pole change over switch and all you need is a normal break-make single pole switch.

Maybe, if you ask him nicely, Kingo (TOC resident Toyota dealer/spares), could find you a suitable switch to fit the panel cut-out.

Cheers

Thanks fellas. I guess the idea is you use the switch to interrupt the signal and make it think it has stopped - simple and affective!

I'm going to carry on trying to find a software hack for a while - I am sure there will be one and I'll post any findings.

Cheers,

H

Exactly. One side effect is that while disconnected, the sat nav position tracking can become a bit jurky, more than you'd normally get with other systems with just a GPS for position info, but it does seem to just about keep up with a bit of a lag. It certainly catches up, once the speed signal is restored.

I think you'll struggle to find a s/w hack at the moment, I've looked, but if you do, please let me know!

Cheers
