Hi guys, I am quite new hers so if this has been asked before, a previous topic or just plain ol dumb please be patient..

Well back in Nov 07 the slight engine ticking i could hear developed into " Oh s**t wheres my oil gone? my big ends knackered " syndrome.

so cars been laid up at my uncle's lock up since.

Now i recently have been offered a VVTLi engine a 2fzze one with a loom and ecu ..

simple question

Is this a straighforward drop in?

is it straightforward?

is there more kit i need?

are there problems doing this transplant?

cheers Martin

Sounds like a very ambitious project Martin, but if you know what you're doing and have the loom and ECU too then it may be feasible.

I don't know what else you need engine wise, but don't forget the brakes.

And bear in mind that you may have insurance difficulties; most insurers will not just treat your modified 140 as equivalent to a 190, so if insurance premiums are an issue for you that could affect the economics significantly. Resale value will be lower too.

i am not worried about insurance premiums

i love my ol Gen 7 ...the options I have are

sell her has spairs / repairs

buy a recon ~ full of pitfalls

repair original engine ~ just as pricey but i would know what i have ( would need help too )

or do the vvtli swap ~which has been an unexpected offer but as expensive as a recon std vvti

the 190 swap seems attractive ..but not sure if its been done, and would need some resources/ help with wiring etc i am guessing

any info appreciated so i can make a decision

If nobody else has tried it here, it may be worth looking on an MR2 forum for help;

I'm pretty sure the 190 engine has been put into some MR2s and that must involve some of the challenges that you're going to find.

Also try Celica-Club.Co.Uk

I only work on Gen 7 so here is the info you need mate

As far as conversions go the 1ZZ to 2ZZ is as easy as an engine swap will ever be, the Body and mounting points on the celica are all the same from the first celica built to the last 1 that rolled out of the factory, Making it not hard work to mount up the 190 VVTLI engine into a 140 VVTI engine bay.

The swap is 1 of the cheapest ways of gaining nearly 50BHP and you will also have a nicer engine to work with if you wanted more out of it.

The parts that are needed are as followed:

2ZZ 190 VVTLI Engine

(If you are buying 2nd hand try and get the best engine you can within your budget, and with around the 50K miles on it, Complete)

2ZZ 190 VVTLI Engine Bay Wiring Loom Complete

(You dont have to use the complete harness but you will need to install 3 wires for LIFT and extend the steering pump wire)

2ZZ 190 VVTLI Drivers side Engine Mount

2ZZ ECU

(you will need the key for the same ECU you get aswell)

2ZZ Manifold

2ZZ Flywheel

2ZZ Mid-Pipe

2ZZ Throttle Cable

2ZZ Alternator

2ZZ Clocks

(the complete clocks, dash)

You can use your 140 VVTI Gearbox, but i recommend using the 190 VVTLI Gearbox

(The C60 Gearbox from the VVTLI has the right ratio in for LIFT)

You could go for a Apexi Power FC instead of the STD 2ZZ ECU

(if you go to the Apexi you dont need to worry about keys as your key will work spot on)

You can use your VVTI engine bay wiring harness

(You just need to add the 3 wires for LIFT, extend the steering pump wire and swap another 3 wires around, 1 in the ecu and 2 in the TPS)

You can use your 140 dash, but red line want be the same as the 190 dash

As for going turbo, there isnt a right hand drive Turbo Manifold out there for the Gen7, so you would need to get 1 made from scratch, the easyest way to go FI is Superchargerd drop me a PM if you need more info
