Number Plates

Can anyone recommend a good and reliable private plate supplier. If it wasn't too expensive I'd consider it for the Rav4. Mainly to take the age off it more than any other reason.

I used carreg.co.uk for the regy I bought as it seemed to be the cheapest. They did the paperwork and provided plates for a small sum as well if I remember.

The lowest price seems to be around £160 then you have the DVLA transfer fees on top.

They even sent me an email to say that 1 HN had come up (my name being Ian) reduced to only £125,000 > more than the value of the total of my fleet by a long way.

Many many years ago, 1CE came up for auction, The owner of Iceland frozen foods, "Mums gone to Iceland"who lives just around the corner from us, bought the plate for £25,000 Bargain! (Allegedly) He was in competition with Chris Ewbank to buy it. i think Iceland had more spare cash :D;

Kingo :thumbsup:

Brought one for wifey a couple of years ago, her initial and and our last name. From DVLA £250 including transfer fee. Then found same reg with my initial and our last name again for £250 and transfer....

Some places jusy give you the plate then you have to pay the transfer fee on top, think this is still at £80, was the last time I transfered the reg onto the RAV.

At the limits of my memory, here, but seem to recall that in the 60's a conservative MP, Sir Gerald Nabarro, had at least six vehicles and, I think, owned the plates NAB1 to NAB9 inclusive. Either very stylish, or very pompous depending on your pov

I have the plate P2NY M on my RAV no bother as yet from the olde bill. It seems that as long as clearly read then not really a prob, no doubt wil get nicked tommorow. Got this through dvla and when plates made up was warned that spacing illegal, but its a choice and risk you take.

reason for clampdown is simple - the ANPR systems can't read non-standard fonts so easily so without standard plates itmeans some thought and effort has to go into prosecuting drivers :angry:

As far as spacing and stuff goes, it is a joke that the DVLA advertise plates that 'spell' words as such and in the same advert the small print say not to misrepresent the plate - something just not right there :censor: Wonder if that could even contravene trade descriptions act? Selling an item that cannot be used legally as described???

As they have a monopoly, then its Competition Law as well.

So what can be loaded on to a ANR machine; is it just un taxed and uninsured cars, and do they work by themselves or does the operator have to press a switch.

If you mean ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) they work by them selfs... Most police cars have them (some even in front and back) gets both lanes then... They are automatically linked to the main database (Insurance, MOT, TAX etc etc) will sound alarm on screen and stop image so they can then see what triggered the alarm.... This is why number plates have to be made with specific text and spacing, aliment etc... otherwise the ANPR cat read the plate properly....

I Watch too many police reality shows :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
