Oil Change Frequency?

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to ask for some advice from all you guy's who seem to understand the 'oily bit's' of the Rav's as to whether you feel that the one annual oil change is enough? My car does not have a particularly hard time of it between services in as much as I do not do mega-miles per year but I was wondering if it would be a good idea to change it more frequently?

If this is the case can this be easily done 'at home' without affecting warranties etc? (mine is a 2007 '07' XTR) and if so is the filter easy to gain access to and what oil is best to use please?

I always find your thought's/views informative so i'd appreciate any suggestions please.

Cheers

Paul.

Hello Paul,

If we are talking 4.3 diesels here then I change my oil at 5k intervals. I believe Anchorman does the same.

The normal 10k interval should be fine, but I just personally dislike the amount of soot that diesels shove into the oil. No doubt somebody will point out this is another reason not to buy a diesel, but I prefer the low reving and low down torque available from a diesel.

The filter is easy to change, it is of the old "paper" element type and the replacement kit comes with a small plastic drain tube, which fits into the filter housing to drain the old oil from the filter. Also included are two new o-rings for sealing.

I would recommend the filter "cup" type wrench for removing the filter housing. It makes the job very easy. It's available from Mr T, but is something like >£30. It or similar may be available from other sources much cheaper. I can supply a Mr T. part no. if needed. Filter housing and sump drain plug are easily got to under the vehicle, thorough two access flaps in the plastic under tray.

The oil info is in the Owners Manual. Typically for a new diesel in our climate it is 5W30. The additional spec is ACEA B1 or API CF I believe. Personally I don't get too hung up on the oil, e.g. full synthetic versus semi-synthetic or specific "Diesel" Oil, unless you are racing the thing or something :D. The "B" in the ACEA B1 indicates that it is suitable for diesel. The oil I used was from Toyota and it was both A1 (petrol) and B1 (diesel) capable. I think Anchorman uses "Morris'" Oil.

If you use Toyota parts and change it properly, there should be no warranty issues. I or probably Anchorman can provide instructions if you decide to do it.

That's my 5p's worth anyway. Hope it helps

Cheers
