New Clutch And Brakes

Hi

How long should they last and cost to replace

thanks

Clutch - depends on how you drive and whether you pull heavy weights. Otherwise I'd have thought around 60,000+ miles for the clutch.

Brakes - same again. If you are worried about cost, invest in an anchor and rope for catching passing lamposts... Pads at the front are the ones which do the most braking force, unless you have the habit of reversing down steep hills. I check my front pads every 1000 miles or so - but then I use the brakes heavily.

The clutch is an engine out job in most garages altho it can be done in situ. The price quoted to me back in 1996 was £600 !! As the Toyota dealer made such an incredible hash of the job, and took weeks to do it as they'd never done one before and it was one of the 1st RAVs in the UK to get a clutch done; I've since had it done elsewhere. The latest being the Jap specialists in Motherwell who replaced the clutch whilst the engine was in situ!!

Brakes - easy enough to do yersel, - pads are about £60 a set (???) but a dealer will take you for a new set of discs at £160+ a time! (Maybe not all dealers)

Anchors can be made from a lump of bent steel and lengths of bungee cord found on the sides of dual carriageways.

Hi

Well I took my RAV4 in for it's 20000 mile service this morning (25th Feb). All ok, no problems, except one. The mechanic found that the clutch was a little bit sharp! What a little bit sharp means I dont know, but I have to have a new clutch!

So of course the blood stops flowing in the normal way throughout my body and starts to reverse direction, feeling very feeble at this stage I ask "How much?" "No cost to you sir, it will be taken care of under warranty".

Phew! that's a relief I thought, blood flow now returned to normal flow direction.

I still don't know what is wrong with the clutch everything seems fine to me! Now I just have to wait until they get the parts in to replace it.

Sounds a bit like leaky sump syndrome to me. I wonder if dealers have to use thier warranty budget up at this time of year???

All friction materials are exited by temperature so if you get the clutch hot it will feel sharp or keen then settle down after normal use (mine is quite fierce all the time - most people who drive it stall it)

If it really is sharp and not just as its always been then it could be traces of oil on it. Believe it or not a small amount of oil will raise the friction - not lower it.

There are 2 ways of looking at this; I am not a lover of disturbing things unnecessarily - unless you do it yourself, rarely do things go back as they came off, eg clips get broken and wires don't get clipped up etc etc (in my fairly wide experience of dealer repairs - I used to run company cars).

However, you could argue that you will get a new clutch (even if it didn't need one you will be back to new) and they should check out our old friend the DMF so you should get that done as well if there are the remotest signs of a problem with it.

My problem is after witnesing so many badly done jobs I don't trust anybody!

I was going to have my windows tinted and for that the rear doors have to be stripped. The guy wants it for a morning and he "doesn't need me to take it apart". He also insists that I can't stay while he does it as he doesn't like being watched. I smell a rat and so for now the windows will stay just as they are because to strip the doors alone will take a while. If anybody is stripping those doors it is anchorman!!! I trust him to do his bit but the doors are mine ;)

Hi

Thanks for the information. Yes as I drove away this afternoon thinking goody I get a new clutch, the repair itself and the skill of the mechanics doing the job bother me a little.

Will it be as good when it is done? or will I end up returning time after time to get it sorted out?

No dis respects to the mechanics at the RRG garage Rochdale, it just seems strange that the clutch needs to be replaced. This is not the first from all accounts either, they have done a few under warranty. They talk as if there is a replacement kit available.

To me the car seems the same now as it did when I collected from new, but then any small changes I would not notice. The big problem I have at the moment is the blue tooth hands free kit I paid an arm and a leg for.

This is intermittent choosing to either work or stop responding when ever it likes. The only cure is to switch off the engine and ignition for a couple of seconds and allow it to re set its self. Not easy when on the motorway!

...............these 5 doors are much bigger and more sophisticated than your incomplete roller skate and the sunglasses and baseball cap are nowhere near big enough to cover the glass. It was nice of you to think of me though.
