Celica Vvti Alarm Bleeping

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and have had a search through to see if anyone has answered this before but couldn't find anything. My W reg Celica 1.8VVTi has developed a fault in that when I activate or de-activate the alarm it bleeps 16 times from around the region of the rear offside wheel arch. I called my local Toyota dealer and he said check the doors and boot were all shut properly (pretty obvious really), they are all ok and the boot light goes off when you shut it.

He said it sounded like the alarm back up Battery was flat and I might need a new unit, which being sealed is £76 plus labour to fit. Flipping heck !!

I can't help wondering how "sealed" the unit really is ?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get inside the unit and fit a new Battery and then seal it up again ?

£76 for a Battery fault seems a hell of a lot to me, I was wondering if I can get the old one out will it be possible to get a replacement from some where like RS Componants or Maplin electronics?

If I leave the fault as it is, apart from the annoying bleeping what will happen ?

Does the alarm stop working all together ? Does the back up battery eventually give up and stop the stupid bleeping ?

Does anyone know where I can get a cheaper repacement unit other than the main dealer ?

Any help gratefully recieved. :D

Cheers.

Andy.

It's still bleeping going off.... !! No ill effects apart from the annoying noise. No replies so i guess no one has a clue on the best way to sort this. :(

I've not had this prob, so this is just a guess.

I'd says that the beeping is the backup Battery going flat (like Mr.T says), as smoke alarms do the same. What doesn't help is that this makes the Battery go flat even quicker.

If the Battery is within a seal unit and costs £76, it's not going to harm taking it off and seeing if you can get in it and replacing the battery yourself. If it's got to come to replaced completely, why not try. If the backup battery fails completely, the alarm should work as normal. So if you broke into the unit and couldn't change the battery, refit the unit and the car should be fine until you get it replaced. Though I wouldn't leave it too long without a backup battery!
