Hi all,

Im new here, after owning *****ty old banger citroens for the past 7years , i have now decided i want to drive a nice car instead. Only have 2k to spend though.

Been looking at 2nd hand hyundai coupes or celica gen6. id prefer the celica as ive heard good things about toyotas.

So the questions i guess im asking are firstly, is it a pipe dream or is a decent celica for that price obtainable?

Do services cost alot for thes cars, as after years of not giving a toss and not looking after cars because thyeve been crap, id really like to look after any new car and keep service history up.

Does high mileage mean alot in these cars, i always hear that high mileage these days doesnt mean much if the car has been looked afer/ regularlly serviced, but still cant help be put off by it.

And finally, how cool are these cars :D, ive loved the look of the gen6 since i first sean it, love the rounded curvy sexy shape.

Thanks, i hope to be joining you as a celica owner soon .

Hi mate,

I've got a UK 6th Gen 174 Bhp pre-facelift car - excellent cars for the money - you get 0-60 in 7.9 secs, can comfortably see an indicated 140mph on an Autobahn - Good road holding, good grip, Awesome looks, Reliable - L or M reg (Pre-facelifts) are more powerful ie 174 bhp - post facelifts ie P ,R, S reg etc run at 168 bhp.

You can get L or M reg 6th gens for as little as £1200-£1400 with around 85,000-120,000k miles on them - if you move up to £1500-1700 you can get N reg cars with 80,000-90,000 miles on them - for £2000 you could get a P or R reg car with 60,000-80,000 miles on it. They're quicker cars than the Hyundai Coupes. Usual servicing stuff - if you're an enthusiastic driver you might need a new clutch at some point - you can get one all in and fitted for around £300 - rear supension bushes might need doing (pretty cheap) - oil change and filters cheap. Engines are pretty much bulletproof - they can gobble up regular trips up to 5 or 6 k rpm, without a murmur - nice engine tone aswell, especially if you're coming from a 1.4 or 1.6 background. - generally though, very reliable cars for their age.

The 6th gens are quite Rare on UK roads - you might only see another one once every 2-3 weeks or so (depending on area/travel etc) - good head-turners, plenty of looks in town etc.

That sounds like a cracking deal, where is the best place to look , autotrader?

Yes - the Autotrader website is the best source in the UK - if you set it up for £1000 - £2000 in the parameters you should see a good spread of 5th and 6th gen Celicas. Some of the cheaper ones are a bit ropey, but you should be able to get a feel for whats out there in terms of condition, mileage, price etc. You should be able to get a "reasonable condition" 6th gen starting at around £1500.

Off the top of my head I'd have said you couldn't get one for £2K, but after reading the advice above I had a look on Autotrader and you're right, it seems you can get a decent one for that money (I hope).

Found one only 5 miles away with low mileage for the year, and condition looks good too, so probably going to have a look at it as a replacement for our Corolla.

whats your verdict on the following. Anything i should be checking for.

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/c..._mileage=100000

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/c...mp;max_mileage=

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/c...mp;max_mileage=

cant really afford more than 2k, ideally id like the car to last a good few years and want to keep it in spotless condition before possibly when prices come down and i have more money selling it on and getting a new shape celica.

Firstly, you may want to be wary of giving away your postcode in Autotrader links (or maybe you're not bothered, but some people are).

Secondly, that mileage has to be wrong on the third link you've given! 10,900 miles! If not, then that looks like a bargain.

Cheers, didnt realise my post code was in that, sorry.

Id say the mileage has to be wrong looking at it, must be missing a zero.

Don't apologise, it's your postcode, doesn't bother me. Just thought I'd let you know. You can edit it out if you don't want it on display.

You're probably right about the mileage, that's what I thought it probably was too.

The one I'm looking at is on 75K which I thought was low.

Great cars if you can find one that's been looked after properly. I'd be looking for service history, and also get someone who knows what they're looking for to check for rust. You can fix most things that will can go wrong, but if it's got terminal rust then you're wasting your money IMHO.

Cheers,

Service history is a must really as i want to make sure its been looked after. And i dont really want to get anything with more than 100k on the clock. Goiong to have a look at a few in the next few days if possible, really want somthing within the next week but ill hold off untill i find the right one.

Anywhere else to look for besides eBay and autotrader?

Celica-Club.Co.Uk may be worth a look.

There are lots of other car sales sites; search for Celica for Sale on Google and see what comes up.

Ric - it's worth noting the difference between the 6th gen Celica GT and the 6th gen ST (2 of those links you posted were for ST's)

The ST 's only got 114 BHP with a 0-60 of 10 secs

Thre GT's quite a bit more powerful with 0-60 of 7.9 and a BHP of 168-174 depending on version - its got more Torque aswell. I'd guess you'd probably be more satisfied with the GT (most people are) - just thought I'd mention it before you looked further.

Regards the pre and post face lift GT's - the pre-facelift has more BHP but doesn't have Side skirts by default - the post facelift has slightly less BHP but does have side skirts by defualt - the post facelift also has different coloured indicators and a slightly different spoiler from what I remember - it also has an Emissions difference (slightly newer car) - one of the other guys will know more on this.

Regards reliability of pre or post facelift GT's - they're basically the same car and have similar reliability although (age) the pre facelift is L or M reg whilst the post facelift is N ,P ,R ,S ,T reg - considering you've got £2000 to spend you should probably be able to get an N , P or R reg post facelift GT for that money - check all the usually stuff on arival and test drive etc.

Good point Sump.

Personally I want the lower power one for the g/f as she was happy with the 1.3 Rolla and so the ST (which is a 1.8 I think?) should be more than adequate, lower insurance group, and probably a bit easier on the fuel.

But you're right, anyone who needs something a bit quicker will want the more powerful version which I believe has the 3S-GE engine as fitted to the MR2s of those years.

Update: Well I've looked at a couple of 1.8 ST Celicas for under 2K (One at a dealer for £1,995 and one on eBay with a starting price of £1000, reserve unknown).

The Dealer one had a few dents and a very badly painted front wing. Interior was in good condition aside from very bad wear on driver's seat bolster.

The eBay one's paintwork was in better condition in some respects, but its interior had quite a few marks, and one or two components such as the tailgate struts were very badly rusted which puts me off somewhat.

Anyone know where there's a nice one at a decent price?
