Tyre Pressure

Hi

Just bought a 55 plate short wheel base rav4 (4.2)

Tyres on there are

Bridgestone dueller HT 687

235 60 r16 100H

Tyre pressure max on the side is 44max

My question, is how do I know what pressure to run these - or indeed any other tyre on?

Usually there is only me in the car and sometimes my partner, and doesnt carry any other load.

Thanks for your time and patience.

Nick

In your manual it should state the different pressures for different speeds and loads. For my Celica, under 100MPH it says 30lbs over 100mph it say for them to be 38lbs. The pressures for different loads are the same on mine.

What I do is have mine at 34lbs. That way I'm smack in the middle, for different speeds or loads!

Hi

Just went on quickfit site, popped in my reg and it came back with

The following tyre pressures have been found for your vehicle.

Tyre Size Front (BAR) Front (PSI) Rear (BAR) Rear (PSI)

235/60S16 1.8 BAR 26 PSI 2.0 BAR 29 PSI

Correct?

It'll be close enough - the right pressure depends on what kind of driving you do. Heavier loads require more pressure to maintain the tyre shape and the contact patch. At high speed a tyre gets softer so you need more pressure to maintain the shape again. Pootling round town/light loads, you can have less pressure as the carcass can maintain it's shape better, and you benefit from the softer ride.

Normally I am just on the local city roads, never above 70 on a motorway

I think from the early RAV days, the tyre pressure was quite low - about 26. Made for a soft ride and handled bumps well, and of course its a compromise to accept off-road.

I can only follow the comments above. I use higher pressure, but the tyres are lower profile and the beast is driven hard.

I would never think of going up above 40psi without the tyre being reinforced - the minibus uses 45psi and the caravan uses much the same as the weights carried are far heavier than the RAV. As for the 265/75/16 landrover tyre, I have no idea as it hasn't been out of the driveway yet - I had to modify the front bumper to avoid the tyres engaging with the front bumper on full lock! :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

Theres no ideal pressure. Its a compromise unless you are willing to change the pressure after every passenger gets in / out of the car or the load changes.
