Avensis 2.2d4d - How Long To Warm Up? Problem?

On frosty (0 deg. C) starts, my 2007 2.2D4D will not reach normal temperature for at least 20 minutes / 9 miles driving.

The needle does not move for almost 3 miles, then very gradually creeps up.

Does this seem normal for this engine ? I've had a little conflicting information, so

I'd welcome responses on how long other drivers expect the warm-up period to take / if there may be a problem

Further information.

My local dealer has replaced the thermostat, which has made no difference.

I thus wonder if a sender or the electronics may be defective, or if it's normal for this car.

Previous cars I've had (petrol) have always warmed up within 2-3 miles, apart from when a thermostat failed.

My typical drive is on quiet town roads, so usually between 1000 and 2000 rpm.

Hi

I have a 2.0 d4d and find that it does take quite a few miles to warm up.

hi

it looks abnormal. both petrol and diesel must be similar with heating up.

in case you can not warm up -- the reason might be with: fault with thermostat; thermostat leak; an air inside the cooling system. may be you have a small coolant quantity after thermostat last changed.

Mine is exactly the same on cold mornings (2007 2.2 D4D).

A couple of miles for the needle to get to the 'C' mark then a further 7 or 8 miles to get to normal operating temperature. Sometimes it's still not there by the time I get to work (about 9 miles). My previous one was the same (2004 2.0 D4D). I've always considered it to be normal.

It is correct that the engine is very efficient, therefore is does not produce much addiditional heat.

I have the exact "problem" with my Avensis 2.0 D-4D, and that is probably the situation for most modern diesel-powered cars.

Here in Norway the Avensis comes pre-installed with a supplemental heater. I have to push a button on the dashboard to start it, when the engine is running. It makes a primus-like noise, and makes the engine reach its operating temperature much faster, which is nice during winter...

Had a similar problem with no heat at all recently and I posted about it here. It turned out that the cooling system was starved of water and in desperate need of topping up and air bleeding.

Top up the water/coolant, leave your engine running and squeeze the water piping to get rid of some air. Each time the water level falls, top up again and do the same until it stops creeping down. Eventually you'll notice a pick up in heat at a much lower run of miles. Run the car again and then let it cool and follow the process again until water dropping stops. It might also help treating the radiator to some some radweld, will seal up leaks and help improve performance slightly. Try it, it might suprise you!
