Don't panic !!

There was a recall a year or more ago relating to the front springs. Toyota identified a weak batch of springs as being fitted to RAVs around 1995. I believe they wrote out to owners affected. As it happens, I changed my spring seats about 15 months ago on my 1994 RAV and was told by the dealer that a recall had been notified to them - they checked and mine wasn't affected...too old!!!

A member posted notice of a broken spring on a RAV 4.1 just recently - wasn't too drastic as it broke near the top from recollection so nothing much affected other than clunking going on.

If yours isn't broken, take the opportunity to get the springs changed. I'd be interested if there's any other cost - Parts King can maybe tell us.

As I understand, the work is only changing the springs. from my experience, the spring seats will be fine, if not a little rusted, as they are thick metal. If not done, it is an opportunity to get the bushes changed on each strut as they will have it apart anyway. Negotiate a price!

Thanks for the reply , it states that i will not incure any costs . It does mean though that i will be without my car from 8.30 am until the time it takes to do the job . I do work near the dealers but i still need a car for work . If they do the job first thing and it only takes an hour thats ok but if they cannot give me a dedicated time could i ask for a courtesy car , could anyone please advice. Thanks

It certainly won't do any harm to ask but they are not obliged.

Good luck.

Yes you are absolutely entitled to a courtesy car for the job! Also Toyota usually give a bottle of champagne or a free service I think if your car is ever affected by a recall. My friends Yaris had a recall and he got a bottle of champers and a discount on his next service.

It's not a long job by any means, as long as everything comes apart nicely!

However it is Toyota covering themselves on a sub-standard part (hence the recorded delivery), and good for them they are still following up cars which haven't been sorted. I'd agree - you should get a car to run around in for the day - its not wear and tear and not your fault.

I got the letter too, rang the dealers and they can arrange a courtesy car for me. Asking me to fax or bring the letter as they dont know what part is required (?) beffled me a bit that.

Funny thats about the only common problem on the early RAV4 ( broken Front coil springs ), well done to Toyota for covering it under warranty :) .

One thing I don't understand is that i was told of this recall in November 2006 by the local dealer when I was purchasing some front suspension bits. They must be trawling those older RAVs that haven't been caught under the recall back in 2006.

If the bottom coil snapped off, that could well pierce the tyre, so i guess its in Toyota's interest to find as many owners as possible, although if its an import....tuff titty :( .

I contacted Toyota Ireland where I live and was informed that they don't retain [records of] what they call Special Service Campaigns for more than ten years and if it worries me I should check into my local main dealer for inspection.

The outcome of the faulty front spring is that it breaks. As far as I know, its more likely near the spring seat. How a garage can tell by inspection is beyond me - needs an xray machine!! The dealer or the parts dept should be able to tell you if you phone them.

we have changed a few, only a few have broken and the can rub the tyre sidewalls.

the only problems in the job are down to age of the car. strut top bearings can be weak and the bearings can collapse, flexi hose bolt snap, bottom strut bolts siezed, and brake pipes could snap, toyota will not cover these extra items.

i am amased toyota cover the springs as if they snapped at 10 years old or so i am sure no one would grumble
