Service Book Query

Can anyone out there solve the mystery of my two service books? Let me explain.

Our 2000 (w) roadster was bought about 18 months ago. It came with two service books, the first one has service history from 2000 to April 2005. The second one has service history from 2005 to now.

Both books are genuine Toyota service & warranty books, but the newer one has a big letter R in pale blue printed on each page.

The vehicle details on the front page show the same vin number, but the engine number (as shown on the engine itself)is different.

The HPI check shows nothing, all the MOT`S back to 2003 show the correct mileage etc, and the owner of the car at that time is un-contactable.

There is nothing wrong with the car, I am just curious.

Maybe someone who works for a Toyota dealer (Kingo?) can shed some light on the mystery?

Ta Bob.

pure guess but could the R stand for rebuild?

sounds a tad fishy! x

No, you misunderstand, the letter "R" is part of the book printing, ie it is not stamped on afterwards.

It all looks quite legitimate and not in anyway sinister.

Could it be that the previous owner lost the first book and bought a second to continue the service history, but later found the first one again?

Ring up the dealers on the service stamps and just ask that they have a record of the service being carried out, just to make sure it is not a book that has been stamped up.

I'd say that it meant 'replacement'. However as you said the engine numbers are different, it could mean 'rebuild'. As a 'rebuild' engine would carry the same mileage reading, the documented mileage wouldn't be changed.

As Smoftah said, ring up the dealers to find out for certain.

It probably does mean replacement - of the short engine.

Which, if that's the case, is great news because it suggests you already have a replacement short engine, probably due to the first having suffered the old oval cylinders problem.

As others have said though, ask the dealer to be certain.

The "R" is a replacement service book

The engine must also have been changed, maybe it was an oil gulper and got sorted

Previous owner probably lost the service book and it turned up later
