Fitting A Roof Box

Hi all (my first post here),

I have an 06 XT5 and need to fit a roof box for our family holiday, what with the 2 kids and a big dog there just not enough room inside !

The XT5 for some reason I am unable to fathom does not have roof rails, the car is on a 4 year lease deal and the though of spending 300 quid on roof rails and then the cost of the cross bars and the box makes me quiver.

I have had a rummage on the net and it does seem you can get cross bars that will fit without the rails, are these any good ?

Any advice appreciated.

Not sure how good a fit some of those are, where would it clamp to? At least with rails and cross bars it will be a proper job which can be used tme and again.

Roof rails in black with a set of cross bars from Kingo £313.15 delivered to any UK address

Roof rails only, in black, £216.21 delivered to any UK address

Kingo

Hi there and, as a new member myself, welcome.

I am in the fortunate position that both my Rav and my better half's have roof rails, so we were only faced with the cost of buying cross bars and roof box. We ended up buying Thule aerobars and a Thule Atlantis 780 box - did a deal with local supplier over a bank holiday weekend, but they were still pretty pricey. I "justified" the expense as follows

1) We have a Golden Retriever, who objects to being crushed in the back by suitcases

2) The cross bars and the box would be transferable to other vehicles, so it's not the Rav's fault

3) They actually look quite cool (struggling for reasons, now)

4) We can now "tour" in style

5) oh dear, run out of reasons, what a pity, never mind

Maybe this approach will allow you to take a view that you're only really having to buy the rails??

Incidentally, despite telling the better half that it's costing money in fuel consumption, she leaves them on her Rav

How does the golden retriever struggle up to get into the roof box???

And does the local dog lovers society know about that?

When fitting roof rails, don't do what i did - and use a cheap set of aluminium steps - they were rated for domestic use which is a max of about 16 stone or 90kg ish. I'd got uo to step 3 when the ladder snapped cleanly off at step 2!!! Came to earth with a thud! And no, I wasn't drunk! I'm around 130kg so now have the industrial strength ladders for the jobs around the house!

Oh, and thanks for thinking/wishing - nothing broken apart from the steps.

I have a pair of rav cross bars part no. PZ403-0612-GA as on page 13 of 2006 rav 4 accessories brochure

i,ve used them once to carry 3 bicycles to france. a top box would fit with these without the need for rails.

i have now changed rav for landcruiser so no longer need them . they clamp on + look neat without marking

paintwork i think they were well over £100.00 kingo will probably advise, i would take £75.00 ono.

my car was 2006 xt4
