Hey, I'm hoping someone can shed light on something that my dealer is unable to clarify.

I wanted a litre of oil for a D4D Verso, owners book recommends a 5W-30 ACEA spec C2 oil. Dealer gives me Shell Helix 10W-40, which is not C2 (may be higher) and perplexingly, it is not Helix Diesel. They state they use it in everything, whether petrol or diesel, but can't explain why they use that instead of specific diesel oil - they 'just do'. What's the score with this? Having come from Vauxhall/VAG cars I've never known exactly the same oil be put in both types of engine before.

Also, anyone else have a resonance/booming at 1500-2000 RPM...

Thanks B)

Hello and welcome to TOC.

My Toyota dealer only uses and recommends genuine Toyota 5W-30 oil but that is a lightweight 1.0 litre petrol engine.

It surprises me that your dealer says that they use the same for petrol and diesel.

Hopefully some of the regular TOC "smokeys" will be along soon to (hopefully) put your mind at rest

When I was in France last summer I needed to add oil. I visited several Supermarkets and couldn't find a 5W-30 spec. Eventually I went to a Toyota Main Dealer and they sold me 10W-40. When I queried this, they said that that was the oil used in France. Just by co-incidence, yesterday I dipped my oil prior to a long trip and thought I would top it up. When I picked up the container (which was bought in France) it had Essence written on it - which is petrol. I didn't notice this at the time.

Yes, I also have a resonance between 1500-2000 rpm. It appears to come and go - I wrote about this last September under the heading 'Rough Diesel'. Eventually, I found one of the clips on they air filter cover loose and it now appears much better, but it is still there.

I went to my Motor Factors this morning and they had a wide range of oils in stock, but no 5W-30 for a diesel. They had a 5 ltr can in stock, which stated that it was for Petrol or Diesel. The shopkeeper told me that modern Fords use the same oil, whatever the engine. In the end I purchased 1 ltr of 5W-30 semi-synthetic - it didn't state whether it was for petrol or diesel, but met the spec ACEA B1, which is listed in the handbook. If yours states C2 then your handbook is different to mine. My Verso is Jan. 2007 and has a 2.2 D4D engine.

By the way, my resonance appears to have calmed down now - it seams to be different for each fuel fill and could be a characteristic of the diesel quality - I do a lot of driving in France.

We use 10W-40 Mobil Super S in all engines we service.

The parts dept does stock 5W-30 is people are picky about it though :)

Mart.

RRG Salford Quays also uses 10W40 oil as its standard replacement oil at service and recommend it for top up when asked. My 2.2 D4-D has done 22k in 2 years and 2 oil change services. In addition, I have put about 3 litres of 5W-30 sythetic oil (Mobil or Shell Helix) to top up when needed. As a motorist with some green aspirations, I stretched the motor in reasonably gently from new, not giving it "the max" until 5K had been driven. Since then, whenever I have had to accelerate more heavily, my Verso has always produced more dark smoke than I would wish. The staff at RRG Salford say that the usage, the symptoms of wear and the use of 10W40 are all "normal" for this model. I had hoped that diesels had moved on further than this and claim to be greener in more than just CO2 emissions than petrol. I aim to keep the motor for the time being, but will consider a change if the situation gets appreciably worse.

Thanks for posting this Konky.

I traded in my Lexus 220d for a 2.2 D4D ex demo SR Verso & read with interest your comments re the oil grade used.

When I handed over my beloved Lexus it went in absolutely spot on and in mint condition! With the exception of a coca cola stain between the thigh region on the drivers seat (other colas are available) it was ready to sell with no 'gotcha's' for RRG. As per the user handbook in the Lexus I only used FULLY SYNTHETIC Oil. Granted this oil is approx £13.99 per litre - Castrol Edge, out of respect for the mechanicals of the car, I adhered to the advice. Given that the car is a long term investment for the family scrimping of oil is like scrimping on fuel!!.

The major significant difference between the two engines other than the Lexus 175bhp to the Verso 135 (or is it 138bhp diesel... its late on a sunday night) was that the Lexus did throw out significantly less soot from the rear under acceleration than the Verso did. I initially put this down to the particulate filters in the Lexus. Upon further investigation I discovered that to my absolute horror that the oil level in the 5 month old verso with 4k of miles was on the brink of being empty! I nearly shat!! Had I not checked the oil level the day after collecting the car, which had been alegedly been serviced by RRG Salford and clearly valeted I could have been in for a whole world of pain! maybe RRG Salford had run out of oil but had forgotten to inform me ;)

Off I went to 'Halfwits' (affectionate name for local branch of Halfords) I topped up with a bottle of Castrol Edge - Black Lid- version. Since then the smoking issue has all but disappeared. Am not sure if the privacy glass is filtering out the weather system from the exhaust, but given that I check the levels weekly (in respect of the mechanicals and the warranty ) and can confirm that since topping up with 1 litre of 5w 30 that the engine has either taken to patches, enrolled in a smoking cessasion program at our local pharmacy, but what ever the reason, the visable engine emissions have significantly reduced and the fuel economy regularly rides at 52mpg combined. The car has now done 8k and has used no more oil since the top up at about 4k.

Cant say fairer than that.

Moral of the story - make sure that the valeted ex demo car you pick up has enough oil in it to get you home

Respect the mechanicals of the machine that you drive

Feel the difference in your pocket and change gear before the rev limiter to maximise fuel economy (prefereably under 2500 revs)

Enjoy the vehicle and treat it with respect - afterall it does carry the most precious things in your life.

Avoid consumption of foodstuffs - and all cola's in beige upholstered cars - whilst travelling... :P

This is my first post with the TOC and have read through the whole of this thread. I also need some oil for top-up purposes.

I rang my Toyota dealer and spoke to the parts manager. He said they supply for my 2008 Verso SR 2.2 4d-4 engine, Shell Helix semi synthetic 5w-30.

Having only just had the car (it was used with 2000 miles on clock) I checked the oil level and it is on the maximum mark on the dip stick.

According to my handook on page VI of the preface, I deduced my engine must be type 2AD-FTV because the other type refers to a D-CAT.(What is the D-CAT engine?). Also on page 386 it states oil for this diesel engine type is 5W-30 ACEA C2 or B1 if C2 cannot be obtained.

I will double check this and the Petrol/Diesel use when I go to the dealer next week. If I find anything is different I will come back and post.

I wonder whose make and type of oil they use on 'first fill' during build?

I hope this information is of use.

Have been to the dealer today and was told my engine is filled at the factory with 10w-40 semi-synthetic so he gave me 1 litre of 10w-40 Shell Helix for topping up. However when I next have a service they will use 5w-30 to refill the engine. This apparently has recently been introduced.

I called in at the local accessory shop and Castrol recomend 5w-30 Magnatec, which is also semi-synthetic. Castrol edge is fully synthetic.

I will see how much oil I use and then decide the best course of action.
